The pair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2021\/11\/15\/uc-defund-wins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> they wanted to &#8220;Defund the UC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They ran on a platform of defunding and abolishing the current student government due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/harvard-student-government-leaders-ousted-amid-accusations-of-mismanagement-corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegations<\/a> of corruption and misconduct, though an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2022\/3\/25\/uc-financial-audit-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing audit<\/a> has not uncovered any problems.<\/p>\n<p>But black activists successfully bullied the pair into apologizing for using the terms \u2013 now they will use \u201creimagine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The use of these words \u201ctrivializes the struggle of Black Americans,\u201d Know Your Vote, Harvard wrote on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CbbqwBTtKHI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> last week. \u201cTo equate a student government to an oppressive force commodifies experiences of minority students across campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis message is overdue and we apologize for that,\u201d de Kanter said in the video, seen below. The audio syncing problems are original to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CbiV1Y3gwNB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"rumble\" src=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/embed\/vwbf22\/?pub=gavb5\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Cheng said black activists have \u201crightfully raised concerns about our use of the words \u2018defund\u2019 and \u2018abolish.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are words that have been used, and continue to be used, by organizers, especially black organizers, fighting for their lives and lives of those they care about,\u201d de Kanter said.<\/p>\n<p>The president and vice president apologized for not \u201cthink[ing] through the implications wrong with that [unintelligible],\u201d de Kanter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we\u2019re sorry that it\u2019s taken so long for us to apologize,\u201d Cheng said.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the apology cannot \u201cheal the hurt this language has caused,\u201d de Kanter said he hopes it is \u201ca step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to do the right thing,\u201d Cheng said and announced he and his vice president would use the term \u201creimagine\u201d instead.<\/p>\n<p>The groveling to the woke mob did not help though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are apologizing because it is politically convenient. Not because you care,\u201d Know Your Vote, Harvard wrote on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CblnFNrutHt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram account<\/a>. While the activist group said it appreciated the apology, it is \u201chesitant to believe the genuineness of the apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group alleged that the student leaders were just apologizing due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2022\/3\/28\/uc-referendum-explainer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pending vote<\/a> on a new structure for the Harvard Undergraduate Council.
