Gun ownership is a racial issue, legal scholar argues<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Yale professors recently weighed in on the Second Amendment in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling<\/a> that struck down New York\u2019s law that limited concealed carry permits.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the rise of the NRA and its accompanying polarization with its association with questions of race, the \u2018right to own guns\u2019 is the right really to suppress inner city Blacks,\u201d Professor Robert Post told<\/a> the Yale Daily News<\/em>. He is the former dean of the law school.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt became associated with the right of individual self defense, and this was a new development in the ideology of gun ownership that occurred in the Reagan era and became dominant on the right in the 1990s,\u201d Post (pictured<\/em>) told the campus newspaper.<\/p>\n

Another Yale professor told the newspaper that gun ownership threatened his own rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe harms from guns and gun violence extend well beyond those who choose to own or use guns,\u201d Professor Howard Forman told the Daily News<\/em>. \u201cMy freedom to enjoy life, health, and wellbeing is directly impacted by someone else\u2019s unfettered access to various guns and weapons of war,\u201d the public health professor stated.<\/p>\n

Forman\u2019s not the only one in the public health school who shared a critical view of guns.<\/p>\n

The university’s School of Public Health released a statement in May after the shootings<\/a> in Buffalo and in Uvalde, Texas.<\/p>\n

The school stated<\/a>:<\/p>\n

There is a rippling effect that gun violence wreaks upon our communities and psyches. Toting military-style assault weapons and gear, individuals with extreme hatred, feelings of alienation, and\/or mental disturbance are murdering our children and targeting people based on their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation. Assault weapons designed for military use are a frequent tool for mass murder.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The statement called for \u201cred flag laws\u201d which allow for the removal of legal guns from people accused of being mentally unwell and the \u201cmodification of extreme \u2018stand-your-ground\u2019 laws.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBanning weapons designed for mass killing in war is essential,\u201d the public health school stated.<\/p>\n
