{"id":112623,"date":"2022-08-24T11:22:13","date_gmt":"2022-08-24T15:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=112623"},"modified":"2022-08-24T11:22:50","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T15:22:50","slug":"american-university-staffers-go-on-strike-as-school-year-starts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/american-university-staffers-go-on-strike-as-school-year-starts\/","title":{"rendered":"American University staffers go on strike as school year starts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. &#8211; Members of the Academic Affairs Staff Union picketed again on Tuesday, the second day of their planned weeklong protest against the university.<\/p>\n<p>Union members gathered at the Katzen Arts Center on campus and lined the walls with handmade signs and passed out pamphlets to passersby about their cause.<\/p>\n<p>The protestors also took to chalking the asphalt. \u201cHey AU, accept this challenge, a fair contract for staff,&#8221; one message stated. The chalking was a play on words as American University has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.american.edu\/news\/au-challenge-accepted-brand.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">branding campaign<\/a> called \u201cchallenge accepted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-112635\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AUChalking.TheCollegeFix72-370x247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AUChalking.TheCollegeFix72-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AUChalking.TheCollegeFix72-560x373.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AUChalking.TheCollegeFix72-135x90.jpg 135w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AUChalking.TheCollegeFix72-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AUChalking.TheCollegeFix72-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AUChalking.TheCollegeFix72.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The union rejected offers of a four percent raise and increased contributions to health insurance premiums for some lower-paid workers, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.american.edu\/provost\/communications\/august-19-2022.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter<\/a> from university officials.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Sadow, a visual arts curator and union member, told <em>The College Fix<\/em> on Tuesday that the union is \u201cstriking for fair pay, equitable pay structure and affordable health care for all AU staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the goal is \u201csettling a contract with the AU administration that enshrines those basic principles, fair pay, equitable pay structure and affordable health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This week students are moving into dorms, but despite the staff shortages due to the strike, move-in seemed to be in full swing. <em>The Fix<\/em> observed vans loading in student belongings and a planned freshman orientation seemed to be underway.<\/p>\n<p><script>!function(r,u,m,b,l,e){r._Rumble=b,r[b]||(r[b]=function(){(r[b]._=r[b]._||[]).push(arguments);if(r[b]._.length==1){l=u.createElement(m),e=u.getElementsByTagName(m)[0],l.async=1,l.src=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/embedJS\/ugavb5\"+(arguments[1].video?'.'+arguments[1].video:'')+\"\/?url=\"+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+\"&args=\"+encodeURIComponent(JSON.stringify([].slice.apply(arguments))),e.parentNode.insertBefore(l,e)}})}(window, document, \"script\", \"Rumble\");<\/script><\/p>\n<div id=\"rumble_v1ejtef\"><\/div>\n<p><script>\nRumble(\"play\", {\"video\":\"v1ejtef\",\"div\":\"rumble_v1ejtef\"});<\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> asked the university for comment on how the strike could affect students moving in as well as preparations for classes next week and for more information about its stance on the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll offices prepared continuity plans to ensure services continue. Students were sent a message on Friday with additional information for those offices in case they could not reach their normal points of contact,\u201d Sandra Rodriguez, a spokeswoman, told <em>The Fix<\/em> via email on Tuesday. \u201cAdditionally, AU Central is our one-stop resource for student services, and they are prepared to help address inquiries and student needs.
