A number of students interviewed for the story were leaders of conservative campus clubs, and held a range of views on abortion and gay marriage, from liberal to conservative. But even the socially conservative students wanted to downplay these issues in favor of the economy for now. From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/09\/us\/politics\/young-republicans-erase-lines-on-social-issues.html?_r=2&amp;nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=edit_th_20120809\">the NYT<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Matt Hoagland, the county leader of a group of young North Carolina Republicans, is busy trying to ramp up enthusiasm for <a title=\"More articles about Mitt Romney.\" href=\"http:\/\/elections.nytimes.com\/2012\/primaries\/candidates\/mitt-romney?inline=nyt-per\">Mitt Romney<\/a> at the grass-roots level. So there are a few things he avoids mentioning to prospective young voters he wants to woo, including the hot-button topics like abortion and <a title=\"More articles about Same-Sex Marriage, Civil Unions, and Domestic Partnerships.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/s\/same_sex_marriage\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\">same-sex marriage<\/a>, which have dominated campaigns past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial issues are far down the priorities list, and I think that\u2019s the trend,\u201d Mr. Hoagland, 27, said. \u201cThat\u2019s where it needs to go if the <a title=\"More articles about Republican Party\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/r\/republican_party\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Republican Party<\/a> is going to be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zoey Kotzambasis, vice president of the College Republicans at the University of Arizona, considers herself a conservative. But she supports both same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
