Kendi was paid $35,000 by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for a 60-minute question and answer session on October 6.<\/p>\n<p>That equates to roughly $583 per minute for the \u201cKeynote Conversation with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi\u201d hosted at the public university.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the contract, provided to <em>The College Fix<\/em> upon request by the school\u2019s media affairs division, shows the deal also funded up to $10,000 in travel expenses, including a first-class airline ticket, hotel accommodations, and travel to and from the event.<\/p>\n<p>Kendi&#8217;s fee was paid using unrestricted university funds, a campus spokesperson told <em>The Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It appears Kendi\u2019s fee has risen alongside inflation. The University of Virginia in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/university-of-virginia-paid-ibram-kendi-32500-for-one-hour-qa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid the scholar<\/a> $32,500, or approximately $541.67 per minute, for his one-hour online appearance that year.<\/p>\n<p>Kendi\u2019s UICI appearance was the keynote aspect of \u201cThe Chancellor\u2019s Call to Action to Address Racism &amp; Social Injustice Research Symposium.\u201d The event was part of a larger program at the university addressing those topics.<\/p>\n<p>The program \u201cis a commitment by our university to put the need to address systemic racism and generationally embedded racial disparity into concrete action,\u201d its website <a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.illinois.edu\/antiracism-initiatives\/research-program\/symposium\/october-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was created in July 2020, in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death, when UIUC Chancellor Robert Jones announced a $2 million annual commitment to fund the program, <a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.illinois.edu\/antiracism-initiatives\/research-program\/symposium\/october-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to officials.<\/p>\n<p>Last week\u2019s symposium showcased 22 projects funded since the program&#8217;s launch.<\/p>\n<p>Currently the public university is applying an additional $2 million during the 2022-23 school year on another round of critical race theory research, with topics such as \u201csystemic racism and social justice, \u201claw enforcement and criminal justice reform\u201d and disparities in health and health care,\u201d its website states.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-115253 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/UICIKendicontract.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"884\" height=\"860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/UICIKendicontract.jpg 884w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/UICIKendicontract-308x300.jpg 308w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/UICIKendicontract-411x400.jpg 411w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/UICIKendicontract-113x110.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/UICIKendicontract-768x747.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 884px) 100vw, 884px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sean Garrick, University of Illinois\u2019 vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion, said Kendi\u2019s appearance was meant in part to help highlight the 22 critical race theory research projects on display as part of the two-day symposium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that Dr. Kendi attracts a wide audience who are there the next day, to see the work that our community has invested in having done and to hear the outcomes of some of that work,\u201d said Garrick, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyillini.com\/news-stories\/administration\/2022\/10\/11\/anti-racist-research\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the campus newspaper the <em>Daily Illini.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A video of the keynote Q&amp;A has not been published by the public university. The contract states the event was not allowed to be recorded unless Kendi gave his permission.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Daily Illini<\/em>, Kendi said there is a lack of understanding about racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could a person even begin to identify their ideas as racist, policies that they support as racist or even the ways in which they\u2019ve been racist, if they don\u2019t have a working definition of that term?\u201d Kendi said, eliciting a giggle from the audience, the student newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>However, when Kendi himself was asked to define racism at the 2019 &#8220;Aspen Ideas Festival,\u201d his answer <a href=\"https:\/\/notthebee.com\/article\/sit-back-and-bask-in-the-genius-of-critical-race-theory-scholar-ibram-x-kendi-as-he-defines-racism-in-the-manner-of-a-7th-grader-who-forgot-to-study-for-his-vocabulary-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made headlines<\/a>, criticized as being incredibly vague: &#8220;I would define it as a collection of racist policies, that lead to racial inequity, that are substantiated by racist ideas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In &#8220;How to Be an Antiracist,&#8221; Kendi argues the \u201conly remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination.
