{"id":115661,"date":"2022-10-20T00:04:38","date_gmt":"2022-10-20T04:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=115661"},"modified":"2022-10-19T14:27:11","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T18:27:11","slug":"diversity-of-thought-event-lacked-any-conservative-voices-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/diversity-of-thought-event-lacked-any-conservative-voices-report\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Diversity of thought&#8217; event lacked conservative views: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANALYSIS: <em>University reps give conflicting answers on intellectual diversity series, point to leftist panel on \u2018physician-advocacy\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>University of Michigan representatives gave conflicting answers on a promised \u201cdiversity of thought&#8221; forum, with one person contradicting his own statements within a week period. Furthermore, the panel referenced by the university appeared to only include liberal viewpoints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we indicated earlier, we have no further updates to share,\u201d University of Michigan spokesman Rick Fitzgerald told <em>The College Fix<\/em> on October 12. Fitzgerald provided a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/no-apparent-progress-on-diversity-of-thought-forum-promised-by-university-of-michigan-dean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar response<\/a> in August. But on October 17 he pointed to an event on \u201cphysician-advocacy\u201d which involved no conservative viewpoints and focused on \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean Marschall Runge first made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/umich-medical-dean-refuses-to-cancel-pro-life-speaker-in-face-of-demands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promise<\/a> of an intellectual diversity event in July, in the face of a controversy over the invitation of a Michigan Medicine professor\u2019s planned comments at its annual White Coat Ceremony. Dr. Kristin Collier is pro-life but did not plan to speak on the topic. Her mere beliefs in the sanctity of life triggered a cancel campaign and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/med-students-walk-out-of-speech-because-professor-holds-pro-life-views\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walkout<\/a> by students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA forum on the importance of diversity of thought is being planned by Michigan Medicine, and additional details will be shared soon,\u201d Runge wrote on July 13.<\/p>\n<p>But after Fitzgerald\u2019s comments, the communications director for Michigan Medicine, Rose Glenn, reached out on October 17 and pointed <em>The Fix<\/em> to a September 29 \u201cHealth Equity Advocacy &amp; Social Justice\u201d event as proof of a diversity of thought event. The event is part of a series of \u201cCommunity Conversations\u201d that all involved left-leaning phrasing, according to a <em>College Fix<\/em> review.\u00a0<em>The Fix<\/em> emailed Dean Runge directly but Glenn responded on his behalf.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> asked for clarification on the conflicting answers in an email to both Glenn and Fitzgerald, an associate vice president for public affairs. Fitzgerald, on October 17, sent <em>The Fix<\/em> a link to a requested copy of the September 29 event, but ignored a direct question about if this event constituted the \u201cdiversity of thought\u201d forum.<\/p>\n<p>Glenn was not included on the follow-up email and Fitzgerald ignored another attempt on Monday to confirm the Sep. 29 panel was the &#8220;diversity of thought&#8221; forum.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> also asked for clarity on what the \u201cdiversity\u201d of views represented were \u2013 phrasing on the event used words like \u201cchange agents,\u201d \u201cstructural changes,\u201d \u201cequity,\u201d \u201cintractable racism\u201d and \u201chealthcare disparities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/peSAEg4naog?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>An event description referenced how \u201csupreme court decisions are weighing heavily on many caregivers,\u201d in apparent reference to the reversal of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first of these sessions will focus on when and how students, faculty and staff may express their passion to advocate for particular positions or to be change agents advocating for structural changes in our legal, political, work and learning environments to promote equity,\u201d the event description <a href=\"https:\/\/ohei.med.umich.edu\/events\/community-conversation-health-equity-advocacy-social-justice-campus-and-beyond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThoughtfully and carefully navigating challenging topics like climate change, war, poverty, gun violence, an ongoing pandemic, intractable racism, provider shortages and healthcare disparities can make our lives and our work more difficult \u2014 but also make our work more important, meaningful and impactful,\u201d the Monday night event description <a href=\"https:\/\/mmheadlines.org\/2022\/10\/ohei-omse-community-conversation-navigating-polarity\/#:~:text=OHEI%2FOMSE%20Community%20Conversation%3A%20Navigating%20Polarity%20FOUND%20IN%3A,Culture%2FDEI%2C%20Events%20Date%20Monday%2C%20October%2017%2C%202022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of the participants at the September 29 event appear to be liberals:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2013The med school\u2019s Office for Health Equity and Inclusion director Kristen Howard moderated the panel. She directed the audience to a separate university website for any questions about \u201creproductive justice\u201d and promised a future discussion about the topic.<\/p>\n<p>-Social work Professor Justin Hodge also participated on the panel. He is also a Democratic Washtenaw County Commissioner who \u201cvehemently disagree[d]\u201d with the reversal of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>,\u00a0 according to a June 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02ENeGhf8qLwwMHGRMvQkepjbRKGn48NyoF5CALvzSsLQqwvXG4LzAnEMc5jMTTX9wl&amp;id=100063680561970&amp;eav=AfbW1BucykQCuwsV8a5FBVvyt9UR8IRk1EFzUP3ob8uub5ZusPdfj0MxYhKrbmICXo4&amp;m_entstream_source=timeline&amp;paipv=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook post<\/a>. \u201cThis regressive Supreme Court is deliberately attacking our fundamental rights,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIn just this past week, the Supreme Court has further curtailed voting rights, made the separation of church and state all but disappear, severely weakened the Miranda Rights meant to protect us from police abuse, and banned laws regulating concealed carry gun permits.\u201d The series of decisions made this \u201cone of the worst weeks in decades for civil rights and has made each of us less safe and less free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several days later he returned to this theme, sharing an endorsement from Michigan Planned Parenthood. \u201cThe intersections of racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, and transphobia all too often harm the most vulnerable in our community\u2013including in access to healthcare\u2013and these oppressive systems must be dismantled,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/votejustinhodge\/posts\/pfbid032t2LbMLM9Ew2tJjDwpVUS3vGoWEuU2rk7RyXLZQjKeZCQ2w9m7sw7xtYKx4qo1WUl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>-Professor Lou Edje regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ledje\/status\/1579801698906042369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweets<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ledje\/status\/1579138687010770944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about<\/a> \u201cracial justice\u201d and \u201cgender equity\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ywcacincinnati.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/YWCA_program_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presented<\/a> on October 9 at the YWCA\u2019s Racial Justice Breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>-University counsel Maya Kobersy also served on the panel. Her interests include \u201caffirmative action\u201d and \u201cdiversity\u201d according to her introduction. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/FILED-14-981-bsac-U.-Michigan-11-2-15.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submitted<\/a> an amicus brief on behalf of the University of Michigan in support of racial quotas in 2015.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Panelists were also asked to explain their backgrounds in \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion\u201d to begin the event.<\/p>\n<p>The Monday night panel seemed more promising for a discussion on debates on hot topics. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/publications\/conversational-receptiveness-improving-engagement-opposing-views\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">included<\/a> Julia Minson, a Harvard professor who researches political differences and how to have productive conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Other attempts to obtain information about the planned forum were unsuccessful.
