{"id":123384,"date":"2023-02-28T17:33:07","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T22:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=123384"},"modified":"2023-02-28T17:33:07","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T22:33:07","slug":"dartmouth-outdoor-club-speakers-white-supremacy-domination-obstruct-access-to-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/dartmouth-outdoor-club-speakers-white-supremacy-domination-obstruct-access-to-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Dartmouth outdoor club speakers: White supremacy, domination &#8216;obstruct access to nature&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Dartmouth College nature-oriented Outing Club recently held its second annual &#8220;All Outside&#8221; conference, the goal of which is to &#8220;foster inclusivity for marginalized communities&#8221; in outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoors.dartmouth.edu\/doc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">114-year-old<\/a> club is an umbrella organization covering numerous student groups such as the archery team, the Ledyard Canoe Club and mountain biking club.<\/p>\n<p>It also includes a &#8220;Diversity, Inclusion, Justice &amp; Equity&#8221; division &#8212; which planned the &#8220;All Outside&#8221; conference.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of several days last week, several speakers discussed ways in which the outdoors and nature can be more inclusive and equitable, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedartmouth.com\/article\/2023\/02\/williams-dartmouth-outing-club-hosts-second-annual-outdoor-inclusivity-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Dartmouth <\/em>reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mardi Fuller, who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MardiFuller\/status\/1545436672824844290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> her experience being &#8220;first Black person to hike all 48 of New Hampshire\u2019s high peaks&#8221; as a &#8220;journey to Black liberation within the context of a very white outdoor culture,&#8221; said that white supremacy &#8220;obstructs access to nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rich Holschuh, an &#8220;Indigenous peoples advocate&#8221; and former member of the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs, spoke about the &#8220;language, culture and land of the Abenaki,&#8221; the Native tribe which originally tended the land now occupied by Dartmouth.<\/p>\n<p>Another session featured Brittany Leavitt, one of the first African Americans to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britleavitt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her website<\/a>, Leavitt &#8220;has led and taught others how to enjoy the outdoors safely while also clearing pathways for the PGM (People of Global Majority).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-99803\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Lee-NCState-screencap-370x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Lee-NCState-screencap-370x242.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Lee-NCState-screencap-560x367.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Lee-NCState-screencap-135x88.jpg 135w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Lee-NCState-screencap.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>North Carolina State University&#8217;s KangJae &#8220;Jerry&#8221; Lee <em>(pictured)<\/em>\u00a0spoke <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.dartmouth.edu\/artsandsciences\/events\/event?event=69651&amp;listing=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on February 25<\/a> about the &#8220;complex history of public parks,&#8221; noting the country needs more \u201cmore environmental and parks leaders of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A little over a year ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/prof-outdoor-recreation-a-white-dominated-space-has-roots-in-systemic-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lee posited<\/a> that outdoor recreation is a &#8220;White-dominated space&#8221; and that there currently exists an \u201cadventure\/nature gap.\u201d He also claimed it is &#8220;excruciatingly clear that historical institutional racism has banished people of color from the great outdoors,\u201d and that the killings of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ahmaud-arbery-georgia-brunswick-f2549024973cdcc757c02bd0a07bf5cf\" rel=\"noopener\">Ahmaud Arbery<\/a>, an attack against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-04-19\/elderly-korean-couple-attacked-in-orange-park-by-same-man-who-harassed-olympian-police-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two older Korean women<\/a> and the (in)famous black New York City <a href=\"https:\/\/bariweiss.substack.com\/p\/the-real-story-of-the-central-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">birdwatcher incident<\/a> are examples of how modern racism is tied to the racist histories of\u00a0 America&#8217;s parks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/penn-state-student-editors-deem-sports-playing-outdoors-hyper-masculine-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penn State student editors deem sports, playing outdoors \u2018hyper-masculine\u2019 activities<\/a><\/p>\n<p>IMAGES: Olena Yakobchuk\/Shutterstock.com;
