Data from &#8220;Star Trek: The Next Generation&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Most normal folk likely would offer one of those &#8230; and perhaps &#8220;Battlestar Galactica,&#8221; &#8220;The Day the Earth Stood Still&#8221; and Isaac Asimov&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n<p><em>Will they become self-aware and take us over?<\/em>\u00a0we wonder.<\/p>\n<p>But if you&#8217;re on staff at a women&#8217;s, gender &amp; sexuality studies department, mechanical beings might have you ponder how they &#8220;intersect with race, patriarchy, colonialism and capitalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On March 2, Brown University&#8217;s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/academics\/race-ethnicity\/events\/surrogate-humanity-race-robots-and-technological-futures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hosted two professors<\/a> from such a department (University of Maryland-College Park and Yale) who did just that.<\/p>\n<p>According to the event&#8217;s description, Neda Atanasoski and Kalindi Vora <em>(pictured) <\/em>&#8220;trace[d] the ways in which robots, artificial intelligence, and other technologies serve as surrogates for human workers within a labor system entrenched in racial capitalism and patriarchy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They also noted &#8220;while these new technologies and engineering projects promise a revolutionary new future, they replicate and reinforce racialized and gendered ideas about devalued work, exploitation, dispossession, and capitalist accumulation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.browndailyherald.com\/article\/2023\/03\/panel-discusses-intersections-between-robots-race-hierarchy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In an interview<\/a> before the event, Atanasoski said it&#8217;s important to make sure advances in technology don&#8217;t just keep &#8220;reproducing what we already have.&#8221; As an example, Vora noted the U.S. military&#8217;s Atlas Robot which can &#8220;independently navigate complex terrain, lift heavy objects and recover itself after falling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-123856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/terminator2-533x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/terminator2-533x400.jpeg 533w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/terminator2-370x278.jpeg 370w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/terminator2-135x101.jpeg 135w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/terminator2.jpeg 577w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As such, Vora alleged that Atlas \u201cemploys fantasies of human autonomy and command, together [&#8230;] values that we identify with the often violent history of globalism. These robots [&#8230;] fulfill the fantasy for (a perpetuation) of enslaved labor. They cannot rebel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/robo-sexism-talk-at-cornell-to-tackle-sex-gender-stereotypes-in-robots-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Robo-sexism\u2019 talk at Cornell to tackle sex-gender stereotypes in robots, AI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal of technological labor,&#8221; Vora continued, is &#8220;the reproduction of &#8216;labor performed by \u2026 marginalized workers of the past.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vora, a &#8220;History of Consciousness&#8221; PhD who once ran UC Davis&#8217;s Feminist Research Institute, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/yale-womens-gender-and-sexuality-studies-program-increases-its-faculty-by-50-percent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was dubbed<\/a> a &#8220;spectacular&#8221; hire by Yale last year where she taught the course \u201cScience and Technology Studies: Anti-racist and Feminist Approaches to Technoscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-123858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/data-1-560x378.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/data-1-560x378.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/data-1-370x250.jpeg 370w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/data-1-135x91.jpeg 135w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/data-1.jpeg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Atanasoski claimed that the design of \u201cmainstream social robots,&#8221; in particular their &#8220;emotional expressions,&#8221; is derived from Charles Darwin\u2019s theory &#8220;that only white Europeans could control their emotions, while people of color could not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, humanity&#8217;s advances with automation have\u00a0<em>always<\/em> been about lessening the burdens on ourselves. Race, gender, sexuality have little to do with it, else Atanasoski, Vora and others would be complaining about how dishwashers are a metaphor for hyper-masculine fantasies about stay-at-home mothers.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to <em>seriously<\/em> ponder situations where humans have to deal with sentient mechanical beings, the pinnacle is the Asimov&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/movies-tv-film\/how-loyal-will-foundation-series-creator-david-goyer-be-to-source-material\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Robot&#8221; and &#8220;Foundation&#8221; books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Asimov is famous for creating the Three Laws of Robotics, which are designed to prevent a &#8220;Terminator&#8221; and &#8220;Battlestar Galactica&#8221; (reimagined series)-style robotic takeover.
