{"id":124149,"date":"2023-03-13T22:52:47","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T02:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=124149"},"modified":"2023-03-13T22:52:47","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T02:52:47","slug":"professors-say-oscars-academy-still-too-white","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/professors-say-oscars-academy-still-too-white\/","title":{"rendered":"Professors say Oscars, Academy still too white"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The chair of cinema studies at the University of Colorado Boulder recently argued that the Oscars and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are still too white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that there is not a single Black woman nominated for best female actress in a leading role is inexplicable,\u201d Professor Ernesto Acevedo-Mu\u00f1oz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuindependent.com\/2023\/03\/10\/oscars-2023-cu-film-professor-discusses-bipoc-representation-systemic-inequities-in-the-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the <em>CU Independent<\/em> student newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Acevedo-Mu\u00f1oz told the student newspaper prior to Sunday&#8217;s Oscars ceremony that despite the #OscarsSoWhite movement in 2015, the Academy has not done enough to address systemic inequity in its membership process, which remains too exclusive to established members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe balance is always going to be in favor of white performers and directors,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuindependent.com\/2023\/03\/10\/oscars-2023-cu-film-professor-discusses-bipoc-representation-systemic-inequities-in-the-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the student newspaper. \u201cThe majority of Academy members who vote for nominations and winners are still mostly white men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DePaul University professor and filmmaker Rachel Bass also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2023\/03\/11\/oscars-still-so-white-2023-academy-awards-continue-lack-representation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> PBS that she believes \u201cThe Woman King&#8221; should have received an Oscar nod. The story was about a group of female African warriors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy all looks, it did everything right,\u201d Bass said. \u201cIt was a $50 million budget film. It was a box office success.
