{"id":125090,"date":"2023-03-29T00:05:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-29T04:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=125090"},"modified":"2023-03-28T11:34:56","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T15:34:56","slug":"new-minor-in-protest-art-offered-at-university-of-maryland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/new-minor-in-protest-art-offered-at-university-of-maryland\/","title":{"rendered":"New minor in protest art offered at University of Maryland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Minor will help create discussion around &#8216;conversations about racial injustice, inequitable development, climate change&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Students can now minor in \u201cCreative Placemaking\u201d starting this next semester at the University of Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents in this interdisciplinary minor learn how artists and designers can play a vital role in advancing public dialogue,\u201d and will \u201c[explore] our shared humanity and [while] addressing some of our major challenges,\u201d according to the art department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/art.umd.edu\/academic-programs\/creative-placemaking-minor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. The new minor will help enrollees spark \u201cconversations about racial injustice, inequitable development, climate change or celebrating the diverse communities and cultures around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university\u2019s media team shared further details with <em>The College Fix<\/em> via email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoined by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2010, \u2018creative placemaking\u2019 is the collaboration of artists and designers with local residents and stakeholders to address community challenges and opportunities,\u201d the media team wrote in its email. \u201cNavigating the process with students allows them to practice the essential relationship-building, dialogue and collaborative decision-making involved in addressing a community\u2019s needs and aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in the program \u201cwill learn how to employ techniques like mural design, storytelling, pop-up installations, public events and performance to advance a community\u2019s vision and nurture vibrant place\u201d and \u201cwill engage in place-based art and design projects in partnership with local organizations, knowledge keepers, and artists in select areas of Maryland, including the Purple Line Corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is part of the Big Ten university\u2019s \u201cArts for All\u201d initiative which <a href=\"https:\/\/arts.umd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">makes<\/a> the school \u201ca national leader in leveraging the combined power of the arts, technology and social justice to collaboratively address grand challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the classes students may take to satisfy the <a href=\"https:\/\/academiccatalog.umd.edu\/undergraduate\/colleges-schools\/arts-humanities\/creative-placemaking-minor\/#requirementstext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">course requirements<\/a> include \u201cPublic Policy and the Black Community,\u201d \u201cChanging Climate, Changing Cultures,\u201d and \u201cU.S. Latinx Literature and Culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU.S. Latinx Literature and Culture,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/academiccatalog.umd.edu\/search\/?P=AMST298Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">course description<\/a>, \u201cexamines the poetry, prose, and theater of Latinx communities in the United States from their origins in the Spanish colonization of North America to their ongoing development in the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/academiccatalog.umd.edu\/search\/?P=ANTH266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">course<\/a>, \u201cChanging Climate, Changing Culture,\u201d looks at the interactions between humans and climate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academiccatalog.umd.edu\/search\/?P=URSP372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A course<\/a> which is more directly linked to protesting motivations in the United States is \u201cDiversity and the City,\u201d which explores \u201cthe different needs of diverse economic, racial\/ethnic, and gender groups that live and work in cities, the historical background of differences, the impact of societal structures and group cultures, and how public and private policies do and can affect different groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another course called \u201cSocial Enterprise: Changing the World through Innovation and Transformative Action,\u201d will help students connect to \u201csocial entrepreneurs\u201d to \u201cexplore current day social issues of sustainability, climate change, leadership, disruptive innovations, and create or blueprint business plans to generate positive social change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis class will focus on innovative thinking skills, personal narratives, and social interaction strategies and plans,\u201d according to its description.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/university-of-maryland-will-offer-anti-black-racism-minor-this-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Maryland offers &#8216;Anti-Black Racism&#8217;
