{"id":125164,"date":"2023-04-03T00:04:28","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T04:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=125164"},"modified":"2023-04-01T07:01:40","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T11:01:40","slug":"nyc-mayor-offers-illegal-immigrants-free-tuition-to-leave-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/nyc-mayor-offers-illegal-immigrants-free-tuition-to-leave-the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC mayor offers illegal immigrants free tuition to leave the city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Nonprofit partner says nothing is finalized<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>New York City Mayor Eric Adams has a plan to deal with an influx of illegal immigrants &#8211; send them to a different county for free college and housing more than 100 miles away from the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/home\/downloads\/pdf\/press-releases\/2023\/asylum-seeker-blueprint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asylum Seeker Blueprint<\/a>\u201d would involve a partnership between the State University of New York Sullivan and a nonprofit called the Center for Discovery. If implemented, the plan would \u201coffer asylum seekers the opportunity to relocate to Sullivan County, attend SUNY Sullivan Community College, live in college residence halls and earn a post-secondary credential or degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsylum seekers will also receive workforce training through The Center for Discovery in health care, human services, hospitality, culinary, and agricultural sectors,\u201d the blueprint stated. But the city is also working on other plans to \u201cresettle\u201d the illegal immigrants in other municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>However, Courtney Gold, a media representative with the Center for Discovery, told <em>The College Fix<\/em> on March 30 there is currently no program. \u201cThe announcement made and the [<em>New York Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/09\/adams-plans-free-college-upstate-for-100-nyc-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>] were premature,\u201d she said via email. \u201cA possible plan is being discussed. That is all. If a plan eventually does come to fruition, we would be happy to comment &#8211; once we know the outline of that plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QABrt2zhkdM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sullivan Community College did not respond to a request for comment from <em>The Fix<\/em> on details of the potential arrangement. The mayor\u2019s office also did not respond to a request for comment on the cost of the program.<\/p>\n<p>An expert with the Center for Immigration Studies warned about the \u201csignificant costs\u201d that \u201cmass immigration\u201d imposes on taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]he Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill seem happy to continue allowing in anyone who shows up at our borders without any thought about whether we can afford to provide all of the social services that will be needed,\u201d Jon Feere, director of investigations, told <em>The Fix<\/em> via email.<\/p>\n<p>The illegal immigrant program, which the <em>Post<\/em> estimated could cost taxpayers $1.2 million, would also potentially open the city up to a requirement to provide similar benefits to legal citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal law explicitly limits preferential treatment of illegal aliens on the basis of residence for higher education benefits,\u201d Feere told <em>The Fix<\/em>. \u201cThe law is clear that such individuals cannot be eligible for \u2018any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, as previously reported by <em>The College Fix<\/em>, this part of <a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?req=(title:8%20section:1623%20edition:prelim)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration law<\/a> has never been enforced.
