{"id":127158,"date":"2023-05-09T00:04:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T04:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=127158"},"modified":"2023-05-08T15:03:45","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T19:03:45","slug":"penn-state-funds-decolonial-graphic-novel-and-other-crt-art-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/penn-state-funds-decolonial-graphic-novel-and-other-crt-art-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Penn State funds \u2018decolonial graphic novel\u2019 and other CRT art projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>One &#8216;landscape architecture&#8217; project sought to remove &#8216;inherent euro-centric\/colonial biases&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania State University\u2019s College of Arts and Architecture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/arts-and-architecture\/story\/exhibit-and-panel-address-new-racial-justice-grants-arts-and\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">created<\/a> a \u201cracial-justice grants\u201d program for projects that \u201c[seek] to understand racial and social inequities and structural injustice in the United States and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The projects were aimed at &#8220;mitigating or ending racial injustice and discriminatory practices,&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/643705663\/Penn-State-racial-justice-grants-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a description<\/a> provided to\u00a0<em>The College Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the recipients of the &#8220;Racial Justice, Anti-Discrimination and Democratic Practices&#8221; grant included a poster display from Professor Michelle Bae-Dimitriadis titled \u201cDecolonial Graphic Novel: Anti-Racist Ecological Tale from Margin\u201d\u00a0and another poster display titled \u201cExpansive Representation: An Analytical Framework for Landscape Graphic Precedent from the Environmental Justice Movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Bae-Dimitriadis (<em>pictured<\/em>) teaches art education and women&#8217;s and gender studies.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> reached out to Zsuzsanna Nagy, arts manager at the Borland Project Space, which hosted the exhibition, to find out more information. Nagy provided <em>The Fix<\/em> with documentation on the displayed material and the parameters of the exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>One of the research projects displayed at the exhibit \u201csought to expand and challenge traditional approaches to visual representation standards within landscape architecture by stripping away inherent euro-centric\/colonial biases and emphasizing the communication forms within the environmental justice movements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the researchers put it, the \u201cresearch protocol relied on a framework of critical race theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later in the project description, the researchers stated that to decolonize the research process one must decolonize their own biases.<\/p>\n<p>None of the researchers attempted to be objective or \u201cvalue-neutral\u201d because such \u201capproaches are unhelpful in challenging uneven power dynamics,\u201d the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, \u201call researchers and research assistants (both individually and collectively) critically questioned their positionality with the shared goal of elevating the goals, voices, and imagery from Black, Indigenous, and Other People and Communities of Color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/u-florida-class-examines-white-terror-in-frankenstein-and-other-classics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.
