{"id":127823,"date":"2023-05-17T00:05:19","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T04:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=127823"},"modified":"2023-05-16T16:30:34","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T20:30:34","slug":"duke-students-want-former-presidents-name-stripped-from-residence-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/duke-students-want-former-presidents-name-stripped-from-residence-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Duke students want former president\u2019s name stripped from residence hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Another day, another cancel attempt on a college campus<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some students at Duke University want to see the namesake of their residence hall canceled due to his past support for the Confederacy and his ownership of slaves.<\/p>\n<p>The Craven Quad Council emailed the residents of the dormitory to inform them about Braxton Craven and his legacy. It also reportedly organized a meeting to share the concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Craven (<em>pictured<\/em>) is a former president of Trinity College, which became Duke University, and originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncpedia.org\/biography\/craven-braxton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supported<\/a> the Union and opposed secession, according to the \u201cDictionary of North Carolina Biography.\u201d However, he supported slavery and owned three slaves himself and came to support the Confederacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Quad Council, we are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all our residents and we believe that it is important to acknowledge and address the legacy of individuals who have contributed to our institution&#8217;s history,\u201d the council wrote, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukechronicle.com\/article\/2020\/11\/duke-university-braxton-craven-quad-slaveowner-confederate-supporter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a copy<\/a> reviewed by <em>The Chronicle<\/em>. \u201cWe also understand the importance of this moment in our university&#8217;s history as we come together under the banner of QuadEx and invite everyone to develop a shared identity that unites us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Craven Quad Council asked future and current Quad residents to fill out a survey regarding the name change, as well as take part in a public input meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public input meeting and survey is meant to be a way for people to provide their opinions and see how most residents feel about it,\u201d the Quad Council wrote, according to the student newspaper.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> attempted to reach the Craven Quad Council on April 25 through an online submission form but there were technical glitches so it is not clear if it went through. <em>The Fix<\/em> also reached out to the student affairs office to ask if it could share questions on if a formal request had been submitted or to provide alternate contact information for the group, but no response was received.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> reached out to Duke University\u2019s media relations team on April 25 and asked if Craven Quad Council had formally submitted a request to change the name and what the process is for unnaming a building. The university responded on May 10 and said it would provide a response \u201csoon.\u201d No further information has been provided as of May 16.<\/p>\n<p>The university maintains a <a href=\"https:\/\/president.duke.edu\/university-committees\/#1581706335406-96c13feb-58fd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">standing committee<\/a> on \u201cinstitutional history\u201d that reviews renaming requests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/u-buffalo-student-government-to-cancel-yaf-club-following-michael-knowles-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U. Buffalo student government tries to cancel YAF club<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> also attempted to reach Thomas Hines, a descendant of Craven, to ask him for this opinion on the cancellation attempt. <em>The Fix<\/em> tried to reach him through a media relations office through the Navy. Hines is a dentist and commanding officer in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>A historical commentator told <em>The Fix<\/em> that the university should reject the renaming request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuke university should be steadfast in its educational mission,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/author\/mary-grabar-guest-column\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Grabar<\/a> told <em>The Fix<\/em> via email. \u201cThat means promoting inquiry into the human condition. The opposite of that is to slander people from the past who do not agree 100 percent with the predetermined position of a select group whose views are very narrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancel culture began on college campuses. It began when universities abandoned their educational missions and began attacking and deconstructing the past and Western civilization,\u201d she said. \u201cOver the past few decades it has spread to the workplace and education, K-12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An archivist for Duke University has expressed similar sentiments when it came to controversial historical figures.<\/p>\n<p>Campus Archivist Valerie Gillispie explored the complicated history of Duke University in an <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.duke.edu\/magazine\/articles\/lets-embrace-dukes-entire-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> titled, \u201cLet\u2019s Embrace Duke\u2019s Entire History,&#8221; in <em>Duke Magazine<\/em>.
