{"id":128000,"date":"2023-05-23T00:07:55","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T04:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=128000"},"modified":"2023-05-26T10:02:05","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T14:02:05","slug":"a-penn-professor-encouraged-discussion-on-trans-issues-now-he-faces-complaints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/a-penn-professor-encouraged-discussion-on-trans-issues-now-he-faces-complaints\/","title":{"rendered":"A Penn professor &#8216;encouraged discussion&#8217; on trans issues &#8212; now he faces complaints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Scholar under investigation after using actress&#8217; deadname\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A University of Pennsylvania anthropologist continues to face complaints about the way he teaches gender and sex issues, which includes allowing students to provide various viewpoints in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Theodore Schurr has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2017\/01\/datarefuge-has-no-plans-to-stop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously criticized<\/a> President Donald Trump for being \u201canti-science\u201d and signed <a href=\"http:\/\/dearmrpresidentelect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter<\/a> that accused him of \u201cracist, xenophobic, sexist speech and behavior.\u201d But some students have made similar claims against Schurr\u2019s conduct and explanation of biology in the course this semester called &#8220;Sex and Human Nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to both Professor Schurr (<em>pictured<\/em>) and Professor Kathleen Morrison, the anthropology chair, for comment on the recent accusations against the professor concerning the way he teaches about gender as described in the student newspaper\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2023\/04\/penn-theodore-schurr-gsws-professor-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Neither responded to requests for comment. The university&#8217;s media team also did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The anthropology department decided in 2019 to remove Schurr from teaching the &#8220;Human Nature&#8221; course in the future, but he began teaching it again in 2021, according to <em>The Daily Pennsylvanian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper reported that a complaint against the professor is in process with the university&#8217;s Title IX office. Other departments have also been informed of the complaints against Schurr.<\/p>\n<p>One student, who did not take a class with Schurr but is on an LGBT committee that reviewed complaints against him, said that the professor erred in allowing students to hold a variety of positions on transgenderism.<\/p>\n<p>Haydr Dutta, or alternatively \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cZd3Sj4Q98A&amp;t=23s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aiden,<\/a>\u201d is on the Trans\/Nonbinary Committee at the LGBT Center, which made allegations about Schurr.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Schurr also encouraged discussion of why trans healthcare could be controversial, opening up some students&#8217; points that \u2018a fair number of people detransition,\u2019 that \u2018taxes should not be spent on trans healthcare and should instead be going to a useful place like the military,\u2019 and that \u2018the treatment of transgender people is driven by big pharma who just want the money,\u2019\u201d Dutta (<em>pictured<\/em>) told <em>The Fix<\/em> via email.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/student-banned-from-wearing-there-are-only-two-genders-t-shirt-sues-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student banned for &#8216;two genders&#8217; t-shirt sues school<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not meet these statements with significant critique, and students were upset that he even made the classroom a place where people feel comfortable saying that other students in the class should be denied healthcare,&#8221; Dutta said.<\/p>\n<p>Dutta also criticized Schurr for including actress Ellen Page\u2019s \u201cdeadname\u201d in a slide about transgenderism. \u201cBesides flaws in language used (&#8216;transgendered&#8217;, &#8216;transsexual&#8217;, the specific inclusion of Elliot Page&#8217;s deadname), the presentation also contains objectively false information and uses questionable sources,\u201d Dutta said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-128074 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EllenPageSlide.TheodoreSchurr72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EllenPageSlide.TheodoreSchurr72.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EllenPageSlide.TheodoreSchurr72-370x242.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EllenPageSlide.TheodoreSchurr72-560x367.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EllenPageSlide.TheodoreSchurr72-135x88.jpg 135w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cJuno\u201d star now goes by \u201cElliot\u201d and considers herself a male.<\/p>\n<p>Penn student Lex Gilbert, a former intern for LGBT lobby group GLAAD, told<em> The Fix<\/em> that Schurr\u2019s course \u201cfails significantly [to] express the ways in which people in the U.S. are and have historically been oppressed based on gender, race, sexuality, ability, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gilbert said people in the gender studies department had warned the class \u201cwas taught by a professor who made a transphobic comment (or multiple comments) while teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student said Schurr would sometimes defer to students for their opinions on a topic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Schurr shared incorrect and misleading information about bodily functions and anatomy, for example the types of hymens and their function. He even misspelled it on the Canvas once,\u201d Gilbert said. \u201cWhen asked clarifying questions during class, he relied on students to give their thoughts and appeared to not know how to respond. He relied heavily upon extremely dense PowerPoints throughout the course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The presentation provided to <em>The Fix<\/em> by Dutta is 96 slides and included an overview of various theories about gender and sex as well as cultures that have other gender identities beyond the male-female binary.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-128076 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/GenderSlideTheodoreSchurr72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/GenderSlideTheodoreSchurr72.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/GenderSlideTheodoreSchurr72-370x242.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/GenderSlideTheodoreSchurr72-560x367.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/GenderSlideTheodoreSchurr72-135x88.jpg 135w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were several missed opportunities in which we could have deeply discussed how pregnancy may be dangerous for disabled women or how trans people are the subject of discrimination besides headlining bathroom debates,\u201d Gilbert told <em>The Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Gilbert alleged that the professor did not follow the right procedures for disability accommodations as well. \u201cThe final exam was several hours long and fully essay based. For any other class I would have spent multiple days working on my responses,\u201d Gilbert wrote. \u201cBecause I was unable to finish, I got a C on the exam. My final grade in the course dropped from an A to a B+. I am extremely disappointed because I was hoping to bring my GPA up more this semester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression to ask how universities should handle speech and teaching styles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstitutions committed to free expression cannot punish faculty for teaching pedagogically relevant material in class, even if students are offended, \u201cSabrina Conza, a program officer with FIRE, said via email. \u201cAcademic freedom necessitates that faculty enjoy substantial breathing room to determine what to teach and how to teach it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis core value is protected within Penn&#8217;s commitments to academic freedom and free expression,\u201d Conza said. \u201cWhen students are offended by faculty&#8217;s teaching, they may communicate that to the faculty member.
