‘I\u2019m sure many Massachusetts citizens do not agree with this abuse of power, and yet they are forced to pay for things that are objectively wrong,’ pro-life leader says<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The University of Massachusetts Amherst paid $677,250 for a stockpile of 15,000 abortion drugs, according to a contract<\/a> obtained by The College Fix<\/em> through a public records request.<\/p>\n

The request came after Democratic Governor Maura Healey asked the university to do so because of fears that a federal court might block the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s decision to make the mifepristone drug easily available, according to a university news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Fix<\/em> reached out to UMass Amherst via email and asked about the source of the funding, if it plans to distribute the abortion drugs to students and how this action aligns with the school’s mission. It has not responded to two requests for comment in the past two weeks.<\/p>\n

Massachusetts public universities must distribute or work with a third-party to hand out abortion drugs on college campuses after the state\u2019s last governor, liberal Republican Charlie Baker, signed<\/a> the mandate into law in 2022.<\/p>\n

Marty Meehan, president of the University of Massachusetts system, said the decision was \u201cstudent motivated,\u201d according to the Boston Globe<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Governor Healey\u2019s office also did not respond to multiple emailed requests for comment on the funding source for the purchase and why a university bought the drugs instead of a state agency.<\/p>\n

An international pro-life group based in the United States criticized the decision.<\/p>\n

Human Life International\u2019s president noted that the university\u2019s news release did not mention that \u201cmifepristone kills preborn children and harms women.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead, the article is dressed up in euphemisms and oxymorons like \u2018health care,\u2019 \u2018abortion medication,\u2019 \u2018safe and effective\u2019 and the like,\u201d President Shenan Boquet, a Catholic priest, told The Fix<\/em> via email. He has degrees in theology and bioethics.<\/p>\n

In addition to the physical risks of taking the drugs, Boquet said there are \u201cpsychological effects of this terrifying experience\u201d including \u201cshock, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and many others.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he would tell the campus administrators that he is \u201cconcerned about preborn children and women.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe approach of UMass authorities is more concerned about their political and ideological goals than about the well-being of women and preborn children,\u201d Boquet told The Fix<\/em>. He said he would \u201crespectfully\u201d ask the university \u201cto please consider the facts relating to the use of this dangerous drug cocktail.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further criticized the university\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure many Massachusetts citizens do not agree with this abuse of power, and yet they are forced to pay for things that are objectively wrong,\u201d he wrote. \u201cUniversities are not equipped to dispense such powerful drugs, and a college dorm is no place to have a do-it-yourself abortion. RU\u2013486, the cocktail of mifepristone and misoprostol \u2013 are dangerous drugs and put women and girls in harm\u2019s way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMoreover, American taxpayers should not be paying for the destruction of innocent human life on our college campuses and universities,\u201d he told The Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis move also sends a terrible message \u2013 that you can engage in fornication without the slightest consequences (except an occasional death, which is inevitably covered up),\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the entire goal of \u2018progressivism\u201d\u2013 to be certain that people are entirely insulated from the personal impact of the evil and often very irrational things that they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called the availability of abortion drugs \u201cabsolutely crippling to spiritual development.\u201d<\/p>\n
