{"id":128777,"date":"2023-06-06T00:02:01","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T04:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=128777"},"modified":"2023-06-05T15:47:11","modified_gmt":"2023-06-05T19:47:11","slug":"no-evidence-for-claim-pro-life-law-would-harm-quality-of-med-school-applicants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/no-evidence-for-claim-pro-life-law-would-harm-quality-of-med-school-applicants\/","title":{"rendered":"No evidence for claim pro-life law would harm \u2018quality\u2019 of med school applicants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANALYSIS:<\/strong> <em><strong>An Indiana University med school director attacked the state\u2019s pro-life law, but there\u2019s no clear evidence for her claim about its effects<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is no clear evidence to support the claim by an Indiana University medical school director that the \u201cquality\u201d of applicants would decrease due to the state\u2019s passage of a law restricting abortion, according to research by <em>The College Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> sought to investigate Dr. Nicole Scott\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/med-school-director-quality-of-students-will-worsen-due-to-abortion-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claim<\/a> that Senate Bill 1 would \u201caffect the quality of candidates\u201d that the university\u2019s med school would \u201creceive.\u201d Dr. Scott directs the OB\/GYN residency program for Indiana University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are about a week away from entering our recruitment season, which we\u2019ll be reviewing over a thousand applications, interviewing 120 people for next year\u2019s match of 10 OB-GYNs to train here in the state of Indiana,\u201d Dr. Scott told a local news outlet last year. \u201cWe\u2019re concerned this is going to affect the quality of candidates that we receive and certainly the education we can provide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2022ss1\/bills\/senate\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 1<\/a> is currently pending in the state judicial system. It would restrict some abortions and close down abortion facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Scott first made the statement last September and at the time did not respond to inquiries for clarification from <em>The Fix<\/em> sent to the medical school. Now nearly a year later, when the university has reviewed the applicants and sent out acceptance letters, the medical school would not respond to requests for evidence, nor could several medical groups attest to her claim.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> reached out twice to IU media relations on May 9 and 16 via email and asked if it had any data to support Scott\u2019s claim, such as test scores, but it has yet to respond. Scott\u2019s email address is not publicly available.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/middlebury-college-profs-students-set-up-first-ever-feminist-mini-golf-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Middlebury College profs, students set up &#8216;feminist&#8217; mini-golf course<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists declined to comment and referred <em>The Fix<\/em> to the National Resident Matching Program and the Association of American Medical Colleges. The National Resident Matching Program failed to respond, while the Association of American Medical Colleges stated it did not possess any relevant data.<\/p>\n<p>Students for Life of America said it is skeptical of Scott\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea that young people spend years in school to dedicate themselves to ending life by abortion as their ambition represents abortion industry misinformation,\u201d Chief Media &amp; Policy Strategist Hamrick wrote in an email to <em>The Fix<\/em>. \u201cThere is a reason that there are fewer abortionists all the time, a problem that the abortion industry has discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamrick went on to say that the medical field\u2019s main goal should be to foster life, not end it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly today, when government accountants try to put a price tag on life to end it cheaply[,] do we need to restate the obvious &#8212; helping people thrive and survive is the goal of healthcare, rather than killing people cheaply and easily,\u201d Hamrick wrote. \u201cIf your definition of healthcare is to kill people on purpose, you&#8217;re doing it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott is not the only pro-abortion professor at Indiana University\u2019s medical school. Dr. Caitlin Bernard made the news when she went to the media and talked about committing an abortion on a 10-year-old rape victim, soon after the Supreme Court struck down <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and returned the issue back to the states.<\/p>\n<p>Bernard, also an IU med school professor, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/med-professor-fined-over-abortion-of-10-year-old-girls-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered<\/a> by the state&#8217;s medical licensing board to pay a $3,000 fine for breaking patient privacy laws.
