{"id":130150,"date":"2023-07-05T00:06:43","date_gmt":"2023-07-05T04:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=130150"},"modified":"2023-07-05T10:06:02","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T14:06:02","slug":"siena-heights-university-creates-new-jedi-certificate-with-taxpayer-dollars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/siena-heights-university-creates-new-jedi-certificate-with-taxpayer-dollars\/","title":{"rendered":"Siena Heights University creates new \u2018JEDI\u2019 certificate with taxpayer dollars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>UPDATED<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Will train students how to apply DEI in the workplace<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Siena Heights University will offer a new certificate in \u201cJustice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion\u201d this upcoming fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>The new certificate will give students \u201chands-on experience\u201d for how to apply DEI in the \u201cworkplace,\u201d according to the professor who directs the program at the Michigan Catholic college.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative stems from a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to explore the feasibility of the certificate. Siena Heights received $34,905 so it could \u201cdesign a new, coherent D&amp;I certificate program at SHU that is qualitatively distinct from the D&amp;I certificates offered at other institutions and which can be offered in either online or blended\/hybrid formats,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/securegrants.neh.gov\/publicquery\/main.aspx?q=1&amp;a=0&amp;n=0&amp;o=1&amp;ov=Siena+Heights+University&amp;ot=0&amp;k=0&amp;f=0&amp;s=0&amp;cd=0&amp;p=0&amp;d=0&amp;at=0&amp;y=1&amp;yf=2021&amp;yt=2022&amp;prd=0&amp;cov=0&amp;prz=0&amp;wp=0&amp;sp=0&amp;ca=0&amp;arp=0&amp;ob=year&amp;or=DESC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grant summary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students can earn the certificate after they have completed 12 credit hours of training on <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.sienaheights.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=9&amp;coid=15627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concepts<\/a> such as: \u201cracism, sexism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia through readings from classical and contemporary sources in history, philosophy, literature and business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Leland Harper\u00a0 told <em>The College Fix<\/em> via email the &#8220;most exciting aspect&#8221; of the certificate is JEDI 480, because \u201cstudents will be placed at an external organization in their field to work with an on-site supervisor for approximately ten weeks to identify and address one or more organizational issues related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also runs a separate DEI consulting company that is unaffiliated with Siena Heights. It has partnered with the university to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sienaheights.edu\/shu-implicit-bias-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offer<\/a> &#8216;implicit bias training.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[The course] allows our students to put theory into practice and gain real hands-on experience applying their knowledge in the workplace,\u201d Professor Harper said.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Harper (<em>pictured<\/em>) explained how this program is different from other DEI initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile many of [other DEI programs] provide useful information, each of them focuses primarily on compliance,\u201d Harper said. \u201cTo me, this is the bare minimum that we should be doing &#8211; we should not just be trying to comply, and there is more that needs to be said about how and why we can foster ideas of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/uc-berkeley-only-hired-professors-who-had-enough-dei-points-documents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UC Berkeley only hired professors who had enough DEI points<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply put, the education programs that are out there, by and large, weren&#8217;t doing a good enough job of providing learners with the information they need,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A business professor at Drexel University who wrote a book on liberal indoctrination, criticized the new program in emailed comments to <em>The Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical Professor of Management Stanley Ridgley, the author of \u201cBrutal Minds: The Dark World of Left-Wing Brainwashing in Our Universities,\u201d said the program will likely be \u201cideologically cramped and dogmatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents have been learning about \u2018cultural differences\u2019 since the Enlightenment university emerged in the 1700s\u2014in fact, the Western University is the only academic institution in the world where these differences have been consistently accorded respect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDEI certificates aren&#8217;t needed, because they aren&#8217;t about Diversity.
