‘The Rover will not apologize for just and truthful reporting that helps Our Lady\u2019s University stay true to its Catholic mission’<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A University of Notre Dame professor filed a defamation lawsuit<\/a> against an independent student publication after it reported on her advocacy for abortion and quoted her comments at a panel.<\/p>\n

But The<\/em> Irish Rover<\/em>, a conservative publication, said it plans to fight back against Professor Tamara Kay\u2019s legal complaint.<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessor Kay\u2019s allegations against the Rover are entirely false,\u201d the paper\u2019s editorial board wrote<\/a> on Tuesday. \u201cAnd her lawsuit reflects only the latest stage in a tenured professor\u2019s baseless public campaign against undergraduates at her own university who had the temerity to publish accurate stories about her very public abortion advocacy.”<\/p>\n

The publication plans to respond today to her defamation lawsuit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rover<\/em> will not apologize for just and truthful reporting that helps Our Lady\u2019s University stay true to its Catholic mission,\u201d the editors wrote. \u201cTo that end, it has produced important stories for twenty years and will continue to do so, with determination and resolve, Professor Kay\u2019s baseless public campaign and lawsuit notwithstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

The complaint takes issue with two Rover<\/em> articles, including one<\/a> that quoted Kay\u2019s comments at a panel<\/a> and covered her public support for abortion. The second article<\/a> included comments Kay made at an event hosted by the Notre Dame College Democrats in March.<\/p>\n

National Review<\/em> reviewed<\/a> audio of the event and largely confirmed the accuracy quotes in the Rover\u2019s article, though there was some deviation.<\/p>\n

For example, the student newspaper reported that Kay said, in reference to abortion activism, \u201cI can\u2019t impose that on you\u2026 but I\u2019m doing me, and you should do you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The audio of the event shows Kay said, \u201cI\u2019m doing me and other folks can do them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawsuit states that Kay was never asked at the March event about how she ended up at a Catholic university despite her support for abortion.<\/p>\n

\u201cA recording of the event obtained by National Review confirms a student asked Kay how she ended up at Notre Dame and how her experiences and beliefs affected her coming there,\u201d the publication reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suit claims the two articles are \u2018defamatory per se and establish a willful intent to portray Dr. Kay in a negative and disparaging manner consistent with a motive of bad faith and a reckless disregard for truth and falsity,\u2019\u201d National Review<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very confident that everything that we said in both articles is true,\u201d Editor-in-Chief Joseph DeReuil told the National Review<\/em>. \u201cSo I don\u2019t have any fear about the lawsuit but it definitely is an odd situation to have a professor at a university \u2014 a tenured professor at a university coming after a student publication.\u201d<\/p>\n
