The former dean made the school more \u2018accessible\u2019 by opening an investigation into one of his professors<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The University of Pennsylvania law school became more \u201caccessible\u201d after the dean opened an investigation into Professor Amy Wax for comments she made about the political beliefs of Asians, according to the student newspaper.<\/p>\n

The Daily Pennsylvanian<\/em> ran a profile of Professor Ted Ruger, who just ended his eight-year tenure as the dean of the school.<\/p>\n

The paper praised Ruger (pictured<\/em>) for \u201cadapting\u201d the school to \u201cmeet today\u2019s needs,\u201d in a June 13 article<\/a>. \u201cRuger spearheaded multiple initiatives to make a law school\u2026education more accessible,\u201d the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Penn Carey Law professor Amy Wax\u2019s anti-Asian comments sparked national scrutiny, Ruger initiated charges against Wax by requesting the Penn Faculty Senate to impose a ‘major sanction’ against the professor,\u201d the Daily Pennsylvanian<\/em> wrote. \u201cWax filed a grievance against Ruger in January 2023, a counter-complaint to the disciplinary proceedings she faced under University sanctions process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last summer, Ruger accused Wax of \u201cincessant racist, sexist, xenophobic and homophobic actions and statements,” as previously reported<\/a> by\u00a0The College Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAcademic freedom for a tenured scholar is, and always has been, premised on a faculty member remaining fit to perform the minimal requirements of the job,\u201d Ruger wrote. \u201cHowever, Wax\u2019s conduct demonstrates a \u2018flagrant disregard of the standards, rules, or mission of the University.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

This investigation appears to stem from comments she made in 2022 about how America would be \u201cbetter off with fewer Asians and less Asian immigration.\u201d She made the comments on Brown University Professor Glenn Loury\u2019s show.<\/p>\n

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression previously criticized the proceedings.<\/p>\n

\u201cPenn\u2019s provided no evidence that Wax engaged in actionable misconduct, like discrimination or harassment,\u201d Alex Morey, FIRE\u2019s director of campus rights advocacy and an attorney, previously told The Fix<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s just that a lot of people dislike what she says and are pressuring Penn to act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[W]e often see universities drum up misconduct charges to get at a professor\u2019s controversial speech, such as resurrecting long settled complaints from years past.\u2026Amy Wax has tenure, so we\u2019re seeing Penn have to go through all kinds of contortions to try and get at her.\u201d<\/p>\n
