‘If Boudin was hired to relate his experience, the only take could be how to destroy a city’s criminal justice system piece by piece,’ critic says<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A former leftist prosecutor in San Francisco who lost a recall election as district attorney due to voter dissatisfaction with his soft-on-crime policies is going to be paid $210,000 per year in his new job<\/a> at the University of California Berkeley.<\/p>\n

The College Fix<\/em> obtained Chesa Boudin\u2019s contract<\/a> through a public records request. It is about $90,000 less than he made<\/a> at his job in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

The contract for his new role as executive director of the Criminal Justice Center at the university\u2019s law school also includes a commitment by UC Berkeley of $400,000 in funds for the next three years. The goal is that the center becomes \u201cfinancially self-sufficient\u201d at the end of that time.<\/p>\n

The new law center director is the son of Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert, who both served time<\/a> in prison for murder and robbery.<\/p>\n

The original Berkeley news release<\/a> stated Boudin was raised by his \u201cadoptive parents,\u201d but never names them \u2013 he was raised by domestic terrorist<\/a> Bill Ayers<\/a> and Bernardine Dohrn. The two couples were involved in the domestic terrorism group Weather Underground.<\/p>\n

Boudin will report to the dean of the law school, Erwin Chemerinsky, who commented to The Fix<\/em> on why he chose Boudin. The Fix<\/em> specifically asked about other candidates considered and how the law school took into account Boudin\u2019s rejection by voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a national search and all who applied were carefully considered,\u201d Dean Chemerinsky told The Fix<\/em> via email. “Yes, other individual(s) were interviewed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChesa Boudin has extensive experience as a public defender as well as having been a prosecutor,\u201d Chemerinsky said, in response to a question about criticism<\/a> of Boudin for not keeping a criminal in jail who ended up allegedly drunk driving and killing two people.<\/p>\n

“He has written thoughtfully about many aspects of the criminal justice system,\u201d the dean said. \u201cThe goal is that he will create a first-class center to research issues regarding the criminal justice system.”<\/p>\n

The university, in its initial news release, praised Boudin for \u201celiminat[ing] cash bail, establish[ing] a unit to reevaluate wrongful convictions\u2026increas[ing] police accountability, and lower[ing] sentences for nonviolent offenses while calling for improved drug treatment and mental health services.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recall Chesa Boudin, the group behind the removal of the prosecutor from his role, criticized the decision to hire Boudin based on his track record.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents should in fact be outraged that a person with such abject hatred towards the justice system is in this position at Berkeley,\u201d Richie Greenberg, a spokesman for the group, told The Fix<\/em> via email. \u201cStudents should do just a few minutes of research on Google and see the horrid stories of the failures of Chesa Boudin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greenberg called Boudin a \u201cmonster,\u201d \u201cfailure,\u201d \u201cdisgrace\u201d and \u201ca blemish on Berkeley.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Boudin should not even be referred to as a \u201cprosecutor\u201d because \u201che was thrown out of office\u2026due to his complete failure to be a prosecutor.\u201d Boudin, while in office, \u201csystematically dismantled prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe acted with malice in seeking to diminish or remove accountability for the vast majority of crimes, and [with] heinous crimes like rape, sexual assault, even murder, he did his best to avoid prosecuting that individual,\u201d Greenberg said.<\/p>\n
