{"id":131179,"date":"2023-07-25T00:04:25","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T04:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=131179"},"modified":"2023-07-24T15:15:46","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T19:15:46","slug":"study-blames-trump-for-fear-among-lgbt-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/study-blames-trump-for-fear-among-lgbt-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Study blames Trump for \u2018fear\u2019 among LGBT people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Said Trump wanted to \u2018rigidly\u2019 define sex based on biology<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s election in 2016 and his subsequent support for the male-female sex binary caused mental health problems for LGBT people, according to a new paper out of Northwestern University.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bulletin.appliedtransstudies.org\/downloads\/BATS_2023_2769-2124_v2_i1-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The paper<\/a> in the <em>Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies<\/em> looked at the \u201cImpact of Sociopolitical Events on Transgender People in the US &#8221; by using a \u201csnowball\u201d method of recruiting participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were 158 participants across Oregon, Michigan, Tennessee and Nebraska,\u201d according to the study. These participants were recruited \u201cthrough in-person and virtual outreach to community organizations, snowball sampling and social media,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnowball\u201d refers to participants recruiting other people to participate in a study, as opposed to the higher quality research method of using randomly recruited individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The academic paper \u201cexamined how key societal events impacted the health and well-being of trans people living in four states in the US.\u201d These three events were the 2016 and 2020 US presidential elections and the October 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/10\/21\/trump-admin-reportedly-aims-to-refine-legal-definition-of-gender.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo leak<\/a> that \u201cthreatened trans exclusion by rigidly redefining sex and gender at the federal level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Participants reported decreased positive experiences (e.g., hopefulness) and increased negative experiences (e.g., fear) after these events,&#8221; the authors reported.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to thirteen of the sixteen listed authors with identifiable email addresses in the past two weeks, but none responded, including Zachary DuBois, assistant professor in the department of anthropology at the University of Oregon and Jae Puckett, assistant professor in the psychology department at Michigan State University. DuBois is the listed contact for questions.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> asked if methods were used to eliminate political bias when interviewing the participants and whether party affiliation or voting habits were questioned.<\/p>\n<p>The journal reported \u201csince former President Donald Trump\u2019s election in 2016, there has been a marked and on-going increase in anti-trans rhetoric and legislation that negatively impacts transgender and gender diverse (trans) people throughout the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> asked for specific details on the rhetoric and legislation.
