{"id":132321,"date":"2023-08-22T00:04:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T04:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=132321"},"modified":"2023-08-21T14:11:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T18:11:47","slug":"san-fran-state-hires-anti-racist-engineering-dean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/san-fran-state-hires-anti-racist-engineering-dean\/","title":{"rendered":"San Fran State hires \u2018anti-racist\u2019 engineering dean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u2018She is engaged in scholarly work related to culture, race, gender and intersectionality\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>San Francisco State University appointed a new dean to lead the College of Science &amp; Engineering \u201cto create an environment of multiculturalism, inclusiveness and equity,\u201d according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sfsu.edu\/news\/new-assistant-dean-dedicated-nurturing-anti-racist-culture-cose\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Diane Harris currently teaches in the psychology department. &#8220;Her research has focused on the development of eating disorders within communities of color,&#8221; according to the university.<\/p>\n<p>The college tasked Harris (<em>pictured<\/em>) with \u201cinstitutionalizing an anti-racist multicultural community within the college\u201d and \u201cimplementing the goals and objectives of the Strategic Action Plan developed by the CoSE Anti-Racism Task Force and completed in August 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to a campus spokesperson for a copy of the report and for more information on the recommendations. Kent Bravo, the college\u2019s media specialist, did not respond to two emailed requests for comment sent in the past week and a half.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cose.sfsu.edu\/announcing-cose-task-force-anti-racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initial announcement<\/a> of the task force stated the report would be available on the college website. No such report or update could be found when <em>The Fix<\/em> reviewed the website on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> reached out to Professor Harris and asked for a copy of the report, her first tangible priority for the new role and what obstacles she has seen so far in implementing the \u201canti-racism\u201d agenda. She did not respond to an August 14 email.<\/p>\n<p>One inspiration for her work is the death of some people who are seen as being killed as a result of racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must honor those who sacrificed their lives,\u201d Harris noted, with reference to George Floyd and others. \u201cAlthough we continue to experience the trauma of racism, we must commit to confronting racism and to stopping its violence and destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/smartphone-use-in-married-couples-linked-to-less-sex-higher-divorce-expectancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Less smartphone time linked to more sex, BYU study finds<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than likely, because of its ingrained historic and continuous perpetuation, we will not eradicate racism in its entirety \u2014 however, we have a choice,\u201d Harris stated in the news release. \u201cWe can sit back and do nothing and let this racist destruction continue or we can actively do something by creating an anti-racist community within CoSE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A business professor at Drexel University who wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thriftbooks.com\/w\/brutal-minds-inside-the-dark-world-of-left-wing-brainwashing-in-americas-universities\/28981471\/item\/47184190\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=shopping_new_condition_books_high&amp;utm_adgroup=&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=593819619485&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwloynBhBbEiwAGY25dH2kOo8Zx0rriR0D6nT0gZ5Nuvvps1C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a book<\/a> about liberal bias in higher education criticized the new hire in comments to\u00a0<em>The Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;San Francisco State will achieve nothing except additional budget bloat, because its so-called &#8216;goals&#8217; are nothing but a contrived fantasy of a phantom &#8216;racism&#8217; that exists both everywhere and nowhere.,&#8221; Professor Stanley Ridgley told <em>The Fix<\/em> via email.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These institutions with their &#8216;antiracism&#8217; plans never identify any specific person, program, procedure, or policy that exhibits this &#8216;racist destruction&#8217; that they aim to &#8216;eradicate,'&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;San Francisco state is typical in this regard, with the added insult that it has appointed a person whose research focuses on eating disorders within communities of color,'&#8221; Ridgley said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People want engineering schools to produce graduates who build bridges that don&#8217;t collapse and tourist submarines that don&#8217;t implode,&#8221; he added. &#8220;They don&#8217;t care about bolted-on &#8216;diversity&#8217; linked to &#8216;social&#8217; engineering rather than to Engineering writ proper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said that while the DEI movement has lost support, the university is still a participant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SFU has added an additional bureaucrat to the monstrosity,&#8221;
