{"id":132380,"date":"2023-08-15T18:06:25","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T22:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=132380"},"modified":"2023-08-15T18:06:25","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T22:06:25","slug":"epa-funnels-177000000-into-new-higher-ed-environmental-justice-centers-nonprofits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/epa-funnels-177000000-into-new-higher-ed-environmental-justice-centers-nonprofits\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA funnels $177,000,000 into new higher ed \u2018environmental justice\u2019 centers, nonprofits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Project tackles &#8216;generational disinvestment&#8217; and &#8216;legacy pollution&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Universities are in the process of rolling out new taxpayer-funded environmental justice centers through a $177 million Environmental Protection Agency program under the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>Saying \u201cPresident Biden has made achieving environmental justice a top priority,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/university-arizona-san-diego-state-unveiled-centers-help-communities-access-historic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> from the federal agency states the taxpayer dollars will be doled out to 17 locations nationwide to launch Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers in \u201cunderserved and overburdened communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The universities that will receive about $10 million each, according to the EPA, are: University of Arizona, San Diego State University, University of Connecticut, University of Minnesota, New Mexico State University, Wichita State University and University of Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining recipients are various nonprofits that will work with the institutions on these programs, officials say.<\/p>\n<p>Paige Dawson, program manager at the environmental justice center opening at San Diego State University, told <em>The College Fix<\/em> it should be operational by September.<\/p>\n<p>The SDSU Center for Community Energy and Environmental Justice \u201cwill be focused on helping community organizations by providing technical assistance,\u201d she said via email this week.<\/p>\n<p>Dawson said that assistance includes \u201cconducting environmental and energy justice needs assessment and analyses, facilitating navigation of government systems, identifying grant opportunities, increasing grant getting and administration capacity, supporting decision-making participation, and training community champions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An SDSU news release <a href=\"https:\/\/newscenter.sdsu.edu\/sdsu_newscenter\/news_story.aspx?sid=79168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> the region suffers from environmental problems such as drought, flooding and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to spearhead capacity-building efforts to serve the needs of communities who have historically been excluded from policy decisions and actions affecting their homes and surrounding environments,\u201d Rebecca Lewison, a biology professor and project lead, said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Arizona in September plans to launch the Western Environmental Science Technical Assistance Center for Environmental Justice to fund \u201cenvironmental and energy justice\u201d projects in the southwestern United States, <em>The Daily Wildcat<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/wildcat.arizona.edu\/148264\/news\/ua-receives-10-million-from-epa-to-fund-new-justice-center-plans-to-involve-and-assist-overburdened-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Working with nonprofit organizations and other universities, the UA center will focus on addressing climate issues \u2013 \u201cextreme heat,\u201d for example \u2013 that affect \u201cmarginalized groups,\u201d according to the report. The program will target communities in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, the U.S. Pacific Islands and 148 tribal nations.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Lothrop, associate research professor and project manager at the UA Department of Community, Environment and Policy at the College of Public Health, said the center will come alongside partner groups to support the work they already are doing on environmental justice issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work with our partners who have boots on the ground in those places, and they would reach out to their communities and community members and say \u2018what do you need help with, what do you want to be doing to further environmental or energy justice,\u2019 and then they would work with them to get the resources and the help that they would require,\u201d Lothrop told <em>The Daily Wildcat<\/em> in an Aug. 6 article.<\/p>\n<p>Lothrop did not respond to requests from <em>The College Fix<\/em> this week seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>He told the student newspaper the first steps are hiring a marketing and outreach team, developing a website and creating a plan to engage students on environmental justice issues through social media.
