Ettun (<em>pictured<\/em>) \u201cteaches at Columbia University School of Arts and Parsons School of Design.&#8221; She previously taught at the University of California Davis.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alpha News<\/em> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The event was <a href=\"https:\/\/walkerart.org\/free-first-saturdays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designed<\/a> for families, and finished with a \u201cplayful demon summoning session.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter designing your trap, Lilit the Empathic Demon will come from the dark side of the moon to lead you in locating your feelings using ancient Babylonian techniques,\u201d the website explains. \u201cThis collective and playful demon summoning session will conclude with a somatic movement meditation, designed to help you befriend your shadows.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Families can &#8220;participate in a playful ceremony to summon and befriend their demon,&#8221; according to the museum.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation is part of the artist&#8217;s focus on demons and feminism.<\/p>\n<p>Ettun\u2019s \u201crecent work centers on Lilit, an aerial spirit demon with origins in Sumerian, Akkadian, and Judaic mythology,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/walkerart.org\/calendar\/2023\/free-first-saturday-plant-teachers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her bio.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The artist says that &#8220;artist-healers created spells, drawings, and talismanic objects to trap demons like Lilit, who was characterized as a dangerously sexual female entity, and appeared frequently on incantation bowls used in protective rituals,&#8221; in the &#8220;2nd through 7th centuries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this project, Ettun revives ancient traditions through a contemporary feminist lens, revamping Lilit\u2019s image as an Empathic Demon,\u201d the bio stated.<\/p>\n<p>The museum\u2019s listed info for Ettun explains how to join the artist\u2019s text group to \u201creceive occasional messages from the Empathic Demon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ettun also has a museum presentation called \u201cHow to Trap A Demon,\u201d which was displayed at the State University of New York-Purchase.<\/p>\n<p>According to the description on Ettun&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/tamarettun.com\/How-to-Trap-a-Demon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The exhibition parts with the historical gender binarism that associates Lilith\u2019s archetype with unchecked violence and manipulation; here, Lilit mediates the inner demons and renegade instincts that are deliberately silenced.<\/p>\n<p>Asking us to consider whose stories, memories, and experiences are occluded in the process of demonization, <em>How to Trap A Demon<\/em> builds on the artist\u2019s research into the insidious side of empathy, empathy fatigue, trauma-healing modalities, and astrology as storytelling.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLilit\u201d or \u201cLilith\u201d is a demonic character from Jewish mythology who has been adopted by other feminists.
