{"id":132760,"date":"2023-08-22T00:02:55","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T04:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=132760"},"modified":"2023-10-10T15:00:02","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T19:00:02","slug":"university-pro-life-group-wins-fight-to-reapply-for-formal-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/university-pro-life-group-wins-fight-to-reapply-for-formal-status\/","title":{"rendered":"University pro-life group notches victory after three denials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8216;In the past, the [pro-life] group was not even able to go through the routine procedure for club approval,&#8217; Students for Life of America said<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A thrice-denied pro-life student group will get a new vote in the student senate following a legal demand letter to university administrators.<\/p>\n<p>New Jersey Institute of Technology responded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/666394461\/23-07-27-Demand-Letter-to-NJIT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> from Students for Life of America that demanded it honor the college group\u2019s free speech rights.<\/p>\n<p>The university&#8217;s counsel responded to the national pro-life group last week and promised the student senate would reconsider the club with a vote on Sep. 6, according to an email shared Monday with <em>The College Fix.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Students For Life organization will be invited to present the organization at the first Student Senate meeting of the semester and a re-vote will take place,\u201d the NJIT lawyer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Student Senate will be instructed that their vote must be based on the defined criteria set forth in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njitstudentsenate.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">student organization recognition process<\/a>,\u201d the lawyer\u2019s letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>Legal counsel is \u201cdirecting the senate to actually follow the rules,\u201d SFLA Legal Operations Supervisor Olivia Garza told <em>The<\/em> <em>Fix<\/em> in an email. \u201cThe NJIT SFL group meets all of those criteria (and has) so they shouldn&#8217;t have a problem if the senate follows the rules as instructed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, the NJIT SFL group was not even able to go through the routine procedure for club approval (instead they just kept getting ignored or passed onto an administrator) so this is a win for now,\u201d Garza wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The club had been &#8220;obstructed&#8221; repeatedly &#8220;by virtue of the content of the club\u2019s viewpoint,&#8221; according to the SFLA letter. It said the university &#8220;impermissibly violated the First Amendment of the Constitution by failing to maintain clear policies resulting in the suppression of free speech and assembly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand that you permit the formation of SFL NJIT as a viable student organization,\u201d the pro-life group wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe club should be active and approved before the first day of the fall 2023 semester,&#8221; the letter continued. \u201cWe urge you to reconsider the University\u2019s policies to ensure compliance with state and federal law, and to respect the rights of students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jonathon Kreinberg and other pro-life students at the public university proposed an SFLA chapter to the student senate in the fall of 2021, but the senate rejected their proposal three times.<\/p>\n<p>The student senate has not responded to a <em>Fix<\/em> request for comment on the situation.<\/p>\n<p>The campus pro-lifers said they have tried to work with the student senate to address any concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we sent our first group proposal in Fall 2021, it was returned quickly and contained comments from the NJIT Student Senate,\u201d student leader Kreinberg wrote in an August 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsforlife.org\/2023\/08\/12\/three-strikes-and-not-out-our-new-jersey-sfla-student-group-was-denied-three-times-but-we-havent-given-up-yet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> for the SFLA blog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile many of these comments seemed unreasonable, we responded to each concern in a follow up submission \u2014 yet, we were rejected for a second time for similar reasons,\u201d Kreinberg continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took the following semester to write a third, comprehensive club constitution and proposal that left no room for possible caveats,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOnce again, after a long waiting period, we were rejected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student senate informed the students a pro-life club was \u201cnot unique,\u201d and they could discuss their beliefs at the campus Science and Politics Society, he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The senate added the school\u2019s Murray Center for Women in Technology was working on providing more resources to pregnant and parenting students.<\/p>\n<p>However, Kreinberg found the &#8220;Murray Center could not inform us on any initiatives they had for pregnant and parenting students, and second, we found that the Science and Politics Society had gone dormant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even more, \u201cjust weeks after our first rejection, an email was sent out to the whole university inviting students \u2018passionate about health care equity and protecting reproductive rights\u2019 to a Planned Parenthood prospective club event,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their lack of official group recognition, NJIT pro-life students have organized events.
