{"id":134017,"date":"2023-09-18T00:02:30","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T04:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=134017"},"modified":"2023-09-18T11:03:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T15:03:03","slug":"two-thirds-of-borrowers-would-boycott-paying-student-loans-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/two-thirds-of-borrowers-would-boycott-paying-student-loans-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Two-thirds of borrowers would boycott paying student loans: survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8216;Boycotting student loan payments can lead to severe financial consequences,&#8217; expert said<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over two-thirds of those with student loans say they would boycott paying them this fall, according to a recent report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf believe a boycott could lead to total debt forgiveness,\u201d according to a survey of 1,000 students published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligent.com\/6-in-10-federal-student-loan-borrowers-likely-to-boycott-payments-this-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intelligent<\/a>, an organization that examines data related to colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u201cboycotting student loan payments can lead to severe financial consequences for borrowers including damaged credit scores, garnished wages, seized tax refunds, and ballooning loan balances from accumulating interest,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/getsure.org\/author\/rikinshah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rikin Shah<\/a>, former head of business operations at the student loan refinancing company Earnest, quoted in the report.<\/p>\n<p>Intelligent\u2019s survey showed students fear paying back their student loans after the Supreme Court struck down President Biden\u2019s student loan debt forgiveness\u00a0in <em>Biden v. Nebraska<\/em> and <em>Department of<\/em> <em>Education v. Brown<\/em>, as <em>The College Fix<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/supreme-court-strikes-down-bidens-student-loan-bailout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>When COVID-19 hit, all student loan payments were halted. Now, after nearly a three-year hiatus, loan payments have already resumed and are due this October, according to the US government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/manage-loans\/repayment\/prepare-payments-restart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Student Aid<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>Over seventy percent of students say they will have to \u201ctake on extra work in preparation for payments resuming,\u201d while half fear they will be unable to pay their student loan debts, according to Intelligent&#8217;s survey.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> emailed the organization Debt Collective, a \u201cdebtors union fighting to cancel debts\u201d that reports success in boycotts of student loan payments leading to some \u201cdebt abolition,&#8221; according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/debtcollective.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> asked Debt Collective what the success rate for a national boycott could be and whether it would leave students in more debt if it failed.<\/p>\n<p>Debt Collective did not respond to emails sent in the past three weeks.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix <\/em>also asked some college students if they thought a boycott would be successful and whether they would join one.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Durkee, a senior at Franciscan University of Steubenville, a Catholic liberal arts college in Ohio, said logic tells him a boycott wouldn&#8217;t work.
