{"id":134148,"date":"2023-09-20T00:03:25","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T04:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=134148"},"modified":"2023-09-19T20:45:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T00:45:20","slug":"cu-boulder-requires-candidates-for-conservative-professorship-to-submit-dei-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/cu-boulder-requires-candidates-for-conservative-professorship-to-submit-dei-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"CU Boulder requires candidates for conservative professorship to submit DEI statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Applicants who seek a position as the \u201cVisiting Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy\u201d at the University of Colorado Boulder must submit a diversity statement to be considered.<\/p>\n<p>The job description <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.colorado.edu\/jobs\/JobDetail\/Visiting-Scholar-in-Conservative-Thought-and-Policy\/49822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a> the program seeks \u201ca highly visible individual who is deeply engaged in either the analytical scholarship or practice of conservative thought and policymaking, or both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It adds that applicants must provide a \u201cDiversity and Inclusion Statement\u201d along with their cover letter, resume and CV.<\/p>\n<p>The program is known for inviting scholars to CU Boulder to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/program-embedding-conservative-profs-at-cu-boulder-doubles-in-size-after-early-successes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embed<\/a> diversity of thought into the campus and broach subjects that might not otherwise be offered. Some on social media <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sfmcguire79\/status\/1688957061407682572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> there is some irony in asking candidates for the position to tout DEI bonafides.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The University of Colorado at Boulder is hiring a Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy<\/p>\n<p>Applicants are required to submit a Diversity and Inclusion Statement. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zetMkNgBhD\">pic.twitter.com\/zetMkNgBhD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Steve McGuire (@sfmcguire79) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sfmcguire79\/status\/1688957061407682572?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But CU Professor Daniel Jacobson, director of the Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization and the program\u2019s director, told <em>The College Fix<\/em> it\u2019s standard operating procedure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer is simple: Because we cannot post a job ad for teaching faculty without it,\u201d Jacobson replied in a statement he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=23821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also provided<\/a> to other media outlets. \u201cWe\u2019ve been informed that this is a university requirement. We would not do so otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean we have to use it, let alone use it as an ideological litmus test. We do not do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Todd Zywicki, professor of law at George Mason University&#8217;s Antonin Scalia Law School and this semester&#8217;s \u201cConservative Thought and Policy&#8221; at CU Boulder, told <em>The College Fix<\/em> his DEI statement \u201canswer must&#8217;ve been ok, because I got hired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no idea what role my statement played in my hiring,\u201d Zywicki wrote in an email to<em> The Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As best as he can recall, he said his statement focused on his role as \u201cthe first in my family to graduate from college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so I have a special interest in first-generation college and law students,\u201d Zywicki said. \u201cEspecially since they are training to enter a distinguished profession that has special norms and responsibilities. They are often graduates of regional state universities and didn&#8217;t get all the advantages of wealthier kids who attended slick universities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so I&#8217;ve always taken a special interest in trying to provide them advice and mentorship.
