{"id":134387,"date":"2023-09-28T00:03:38","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T04:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=134387"},"modified":"2023-09-27T06:35:47","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T10:35:47","slug":"reimagining-capitalism-advocate-will-take-helm-of-london-school-of-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/reimagining-capitalism-advocate-will-take-helm-of-london-school-of-economics\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Reimagining capitalism\u2019 advocate will take helm of London School of Economics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Previously bailed out disgraced cryptocurrency executive facing federal fraud charges<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>An advocate for \u201creimagining capitalism\u201d will now lead the London School of Economics.<\/p>\n<p>Larry Kramer will leave his position at the liberal William and Flora Hewlett Foundation after 10 years as president to take the presidency and vice chancellor role at the London School of Economics starting next year.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation, under Kramer\u2019s tenure, sent millions of dollars to prestigious universities for \u201creimagining capitalism\u201d projects.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to LSE\u2019s media team to ask if the university received similar grants. Fiona Metcalfe, the college\u2019s communications director, did not respond to two email requests for comment sent in the past several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Kramer (<em>pictured<\/em>) \u201cbrings a wealth of experience and expertise to lead the School in advancing our mission to know the causes of things for the betterment of society,\u201d Chair of the Council Susan Liautaud <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/News\/Latest-news-from-LSE\/2023\/g-July-2023\/LSE-appoints-new-President-and-Vice-Chancellor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> in the announcement. \u201cWe are thrilled that Larry Kramer is joining LSE. Larry is an outstanding and visionary leader and scholar,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n<p>That experience includes sending millions of dollars to rethink \u201canti-government\u201d and \u201cfree-market fundamentalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeoliberalism\u2019s anti-government, free-market fundamentalism is simply not suited for today\u2019s economy and society,\u201d Kramer said in an announcement about a $7.5 million grant to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/harvard-professors-receive-7-5-million-for-reimagining-capitalism-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He stated at the time:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This joint effort reflects our shared interest in replacing outdated 20th-century thinking \u2014 individualistic versus collectivist, central control versus free markets, liberty versus equality, and the like \u2014 with new ideas that can lead to broader economic justice and prosperity for people around the world. This is a first step to support forward-thinking scholars, students, and thought leaders who can break out of a patently failing neoliberal paradigm, with its ossified left-right divides, and help shape a bold new vision for what people should expect from their governments and economies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MIT, Howard University and Johns Hopkins University were also slated to receive funding, according to a foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/hewlett.org\/newsroom\/major-philanthropies-launch-effort-to-establish-multidisciplinary-centers-at-leading-academic-institutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a>. Columbia University also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/new-columbia-center-will-reimagine-the-economy-to-be-fairer-more-inclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received<\/a> money for its initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Columbia\u2019s initiative aimed to help the university scholars work on a \u201cmore sustainable and inclusive path to individual dignity and shared prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Right now <em>The College Fix<\/em> has a back-to-school campaign to help us continue to support our amazing student journalists.
