{"id":134685,"date":"2023-10-02T00:02:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T04:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=134685"},"modified":"2023-09-30T06:21:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-30T10:21:16","slug":"harvard-students-demand-reinstatement-of-identity-based-journals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/harvard-students-demand-reinstatement-of-identity-based-journals\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvard students fight for control of journals, despite some being inactive for years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>&#8216;The journals operate like wasteful, disjointed class projects that no one reads,&#8217; one student reportedly said<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students at Harvard&#8217;s public policy school called on the university to preserve the\u00a0 &#8220;AntiRacism Policy Journal&#8221; and 13 others that will be merged into one publication.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/shorensteincenter.org\/programs\/student-media-initiative\/student-journals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journals<\/a> for which the Harvard Kennedy School students are fighting have been defunct for months or years. The<em> Gender Policy Journal<\/em> website <a href=\"https:\/\/gpj.hkspublications.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lists<\/a> its latest &#8220;edition&#8221; as &#8220;Spring 2023,&#8221; and its last post was in May. The <em>Human Rights Policy Journal<\/em> has not posted to its <a href=\"https:\/\/hrpj.hkspublications.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> since 2018, a\u00a0<em>College Fix<\/em> review on Sep. 30 found.<\/p>\n<p>The former co-editor-in-chief of the <em>Asian Policy Review<\/em>, Riva Yeo, said she will not pursue any position with the planned consolidated journal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Shorenstein Center is fighting with students for editorial control over student publications when it should be advancing important stories,&#8221; Yeo told<em> The Crimson.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out via email to Yeo for comment and received an initial response stating she would offer remarks at a later date. She has not responded to questions.<\/p>\n<p>The future faculty advisor of the new journal, <em>HKS Student Policy Review<\/em>, explained the Kennedy School&#8217;s decision to consolidate in an email to <em>The Fix. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe former websites were difficult for students to use\u2014past editors reported that it could take three hours to post a simple story,\u201d Shorenstein Center Director and Professor Nancy Gibbs said. \u201cWe are hoping that in addition to traditional text, students will take the opportunity to explore audio, video, data visualization and other methods of presenting information in compelling ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new journal will be an online publication, so students can reach wider audiences. The original, print-based journals had varied circulations from year to year, Gibbs wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The new journal\u2019s first year will be a time for students to \u201cexplore different approaches to editorial structure\u201d and determine how the publication will function from then on, Gibbs told <em>The Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The new website for the HKS Student Policy Review should be available by the end of September, Gibbs said.<\/p>\n<p>An open letter from students affiliated with the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School stated the decision to merge the student journals was made &#8220;&#8216;unilaterally,&#8221; <em>The Harvard Crimson<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2023\/8\/28\/hks-student-journal-open-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.
