{"id":135048,"date":"2023-10-07T09:18:57","date_gmt":"2023-10-07T13:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=135048"},"modified":"2023-10-07T19:42:20","modified_gmt":"2023-10-07T23:42:20","slug":"unlv-law-school-apologizes-for-using-word-picnic-changes-it-to-lunch-by-the-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/unlv-law-school-apologizes-for-using-word-picnic-changes-it-to-lunch-by-the-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"UNLV law school apologizes for using word &#8216;picnic,&#8217; changes it to &#8216;Lunch by the Lake&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A scheduled &#8220;picnic&#8221; sponsored by the University of Nevada Las Vegas law school&#8217;s Environmental Law Society has been renamed &#8220;Lunch by the Lake&#8221; due to &#8220;diversity and inclusion&#8221; concerns.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1710378499909828905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a memo<\/a> obtained by Libs of TikTok, the law group informed members that the word &#8220;picnic&#8221; has &#8220;historical and offensive connotations,&#8221; and apologized for &#8220;any harm or discomfort&#8221; caused by its use.<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s view mirrors that of the University of Michigan&#8217;s IT department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/umichs-it-department-told-to-stop-using-word-picnic-it-could-harm-morale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from several years ago<\/a>: &#8220;Picnic&#8221; was included in a \u201cWords Matter Task Force&#8217;s&#8221; list of offensive words and phrases along with &#8220;brown bag,&#8221; &#8220;blacklist&#8221; and &#8220;long time, no see&#8221; among others.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Reuters did a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-factcheck-picnic-origin-lynchings\/fact-check-the-word-picnic-does-not-originate-from-racist-lynchings-idUSKCN24E21V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact check<\/a> on the alleged offensiveness of &#8220;picnic&#8221;; its verdict: It &#8220;does not originate from racist lynchings&#8221; but instead comes from the 300-plus-year-old French word \u201cpique-nique,\u201d meaning a potluck-like social gathering.<\/p>\n<p>The UNLV event memo even uses &#8220;potluck&#8221; <em>(pictured).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Still, Reuters claimed 19th and 20th-century lynchings of black Americans &#8220;often occurred in gatherings that could be referred to as picnics.&#8221; But a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2019\/feb\/21\/robert-mckinzie\/fact-checking-myth-word-picnic-racist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PolitiFact<\/a> article noted the term historians actually use is &#8220;spectacle lynchings&#8221; &#8212; where people &#8220;took photographs and looked for souvenirs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ferris State University&#8217;s David Pilgrim, curator of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, said &#8220;it\u2019s possible someone used the word &#8216;picnic&#8217; to refer to lynchings, but &#8216;what we know for a fact is that\u2019s not where the word &#8216;picnic&#8217; came from.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/F7x8LbfXMAAAIkL?format=jpg&amp;name=large\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"862\" height=\"1053\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2021, a student group at Brandeis University ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/brandeis-u-adds-to-its-list-of-offensive-words-and-phrases-one-should-avoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deleting<\/a> &#8220;picnic&#8221; from a list of &#8220;oppressive&#8221; words and phrases in response to massive mockery.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix\u00a0<\/em>asked UNLV Environmental Law Society President Julianna Ness precisely how &#8220;picnic&#8221; is offensive; she did not respond.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> has long documented universities&#8217; word policing; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/brainstorm-on-new-list-of-words-to-avoid-insensitive-to-those-with-brain-injuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other terms<\/a> considered offensive over the last few years include &#8220;chief,&#8221; &#8220;step,&#8221; &#8220;ladies and gentlemen,&#8221; &#8220;snowflake,&#8221; &#8220;brainstorm&#8221; and &#8220;American.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Right now <em>The College Fix<\/em> has a back-to-school campaign to help us continue to support our amazing student journalists.
