{"id":136099,"date":"2023-10-25T00:11:09","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T04:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=136099"},"modified":"2023-10-25T06:26:05","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T10:26:05","slug":"ucla-study-convince-white-people-of-present-day-racism-by-showing-them-old-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/ucla-study-convince-white-people-of-present-day-racism-by-showing-them-old-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"UCLA study: Convince white people racism exists by showing them old photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Medical reform group says it&#8217;s good to teach history, but that does not prove racism today<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A study recently published by UCLA researchers suggests that showing white people historical photos of racism toward black Americans in the healthcare system helps them believe racism exists today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/fulltext\/2024-11121-001.pdf?auth_token=b67cd760838af035ef05652f32b0e06d7f6e077f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The study<\/a>, published by the American Psychological Association, exposed approximately 400 white participants to decades-old images that allegedly depicted instances of discrimination towards black Americans in the healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImportantly, [the study] found that learning about Critical Black History in healthcare increased White Americans\u2019 perspective-taking and led to more recognition of and support for addressing racism broadly, and racism in healthcare specifically,\u201d the study in the <em>Journal of Experimental Psychology: General<\/em>\u00a0stated.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were shown, for example, a photo about Fannie Lou Hamer, a black woman who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/freedomsummer-hamer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sterilized<\/a> without her consent. Though the study says the photos were from the 1800s to present, it only provided one example.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther photographs in this lesson documented stories of harmful, unconsented-to and even fatal medical experimentation on Black people aimed at advancing medical research \u2014 experimentation that was supported by medical and broader national and government agencies,\u201d a UCLA news release <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/learning-black-history-can-change-perspectives-on-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA stated that learning about \u201chistorical incidences\u201d of racism against black Americans \u201ccan contribute to white peoples\u2019 recognition of health disparities currently faced by Black Americans and lead to their support for policies that aim to create more equitable health outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to UCLA doctoral student Kimberly Martin and Professor Kerri Johnson who conducted the study. <em>The Fix<\/em> asked the researchers how the presence of racism in the healthcare system decades ago proves that it still exists in healthcare today.<\/p>\n<p>Martin (<em>pictured, right<\/em>) and Johnson (<em>pictured, left<\/em>) did not respond to multiple requests for comment sent in the past three weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/espn-to-feature-professor-ibram-kendi-in-new-show-about-racism-in-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN to feature Kendi in new show about racism in sports<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/former-med-school-dean-debunks-push-to-match-patients-and-doctors-by-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Do No Harm<\/a>, a nonprofit group fighting wokeness in healthcare, disputed the study\u2019s results and opposed the idea that the research presented proves racism still exists in healthcare today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding and teaching the gross injustices that were inflicted on black Americans by physicians is a noble undertaking,\u201d Ian Kingsbury, director of research at Do No Harm, told <em>The Fix<\/em> via a media statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that history is not evidence that such injustices are being committed today, even if presenting that history leads people to believe otherwise,\u201d Kingsbury said. \u201cIn fact, it&#8217;s telling that the researchers have to use decades- or centuries-old historical accounts to convince people that racism still permeates the healthcare system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kingsbury also said the researchers would have presented modern examples of racism in healthcare if their claims were legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that racism still existed today they could simply show people contemporary accounts of it,\u201d Kingsbury said.<\/p>\n<p>In the news release highlighting the study, Martin said that the proof of racism in health care is \u201coverwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is overwhelming evidence of the existence of racism in health care and the persistence of stereotypes, but with our work, we aim to demonstrate that there could be ways to intervene, reduce discrimination and create more equitable health care outcomes,\u201d Martin stated.<\/p>\n<p>Martin also stated that looking at historical examples of racism in healthcare can help form an \u201cequitable\u201d society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEfforts to silence stories of oppression rob people of the opportunity to gain insights and perspective, particularly about oppressed people,\u201d she stated. \u201cOur evidence suggests that with the study of an accurate history of injustice comes increased perspective-taking and broader support for a more equitable, just society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Last chance to <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/about\/support-a-student-today\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">support student journalists<\/span><\/a> during our Back to School fundraising campaign!
