{"id":136177,"date":"2023-10-26T00:04:18","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T04:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=136177"},"modified":"2023-10-25T16:32:36","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T20:32:36","slug":"roe-reversal-hasnt-changed-med-student-post-grad-plans-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/roe-reversal-hasnt-changed-med-student-post-grad-plans-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Roe reversal hasn&#8217;t changed med student post-grad plans: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8216;Reduced desired&#8217; to go to pro-life states even among abortion training students<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/greenjournal\/fulltext\/2023\/11000\/effects_of_the_dobbs_v_jackson_women_s_health.15.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent study<\/a> purported to \u201cdemonstrate reduced desire of residents in obstetrics and gynecology to practice or pursue fellowship in restrictive states after residency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the results, which came from interviewing medical students in an abortion training program, found that an overwhelming majority had not changed their plans.<\/p>\n<p>The paper in<em> Obstetrics and Gynecology<\/em> looked to study the effect of the Supreme Court decision, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/students-celebrate-first-post-roe-march-for-life-but-say-more-work-lies-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dobbs v. Jackson<\/em><\/a>, which returned the issue of abortion to the states and elected legislators, on medical student plans.<\/p>\n<p>It did so by studying OB\/GYN medical students who were in the Ryan Program to learn how to kill preborn babies in the womb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the 17.6 percent represents the people who originally were intending to practice in one state and the Dobbs decision made them change their decision to another state,\u201d Dr. Alexandra Woodcock told <em>The College Fix<\/em> on a phone interview. She is the corresponding author on the study and a member of the OB\/GYN department at University of Utah School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who were originally intending on working in an abortion restricted state were 8 times more likely to make this change,\u201d Woodcock told <em>The Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> asked how she had come to the conclusion there was a \u201creduced desire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the research team wants to \u201crepeat the study on residents graduating this year to see if there is a further increase in residents avoiding restrictive states,\u201d because respondents would then have more time to react to the <em>Dobbs v. Jackson<\/em> decision.<\/p>\n<p>Students were surveyed in March and April 2023, nearly a full year after the June 2022 decision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/small-ut-austin-study-backed-by-planned-parenthood-criticizes-cuts-to-abortion-giant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood-backed study criticizes cuts to abortion giant<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously we would have liked to have a survey of all graduating residents in the United States,\u201d Dr. Woodcock told <em>The Fix<\/em>. \u201cUnfortunately it is difficult methodologically to survey every single resident in the country which is why we ended up using the Ryan Program to distribute, because they have an established list-serv.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, even the next study would ask Ryan abortion training program students again, Woodcock said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think preventing maternal care deserts is the most important thing we are trying to accomplish, because we all care about maternal health in our country,\u201d Woodcock said.<\/p>\n<p>A social scientist who studies abortion polling and research told The Fix the study\u2019s \u201cconclusion sounds reasonable, but it needs context.<\/p>\n<p>Because only abortion training program students were surveyed, it is \u201creasonable that students interested in performing abortions would not seek employment in states where abortions are banned or legally limited,\u201d Professor Michael New told <em>The Fix<\/em> via email.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the study recognized this \u201cbias\u201d and wrote, &#8220;This larger proportion of subspecialty-bound graduates might bias our study toward those interested in abortion care, particularly given the inclusion of maternal\u2013fetal medicine and complex family planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this does not \u201cinvalidate the results\u2026it does skew the results,\u201d the Catholic University of America professor said. \u201cIt does not tell us much about the fellowship or employment plans of those obstetrics and gynecology students who are not interested in performing abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New told <em>The Fix<\/em> that surveys are not the best method to \u201canalyze career or education choices\u2026[because] [p]eople can say one thing on a survey, but actually decide otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research would be far stronger methodologically, if it looked at the actual decisions that obstetrics and gynecology students made about fellowships or employment after they graduated,\u201d New said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Last chance to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/about\/support-a-student-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support student journalists<\/a><\/span> during our Back to School fundraising campaign!
