{"id":136479,"date":"2023-10-31T00:04:51","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T04:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=136479"},"modified":"2023-10-31T21:19:44","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T01:19:44","slug":"med-school-accreditor-requires-commitment-to-dei-in-mission-statements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/med-school-accreditor-requires-commitment-to-dei-in-mission-statements\/","title":{"rendered":"Med school accreditor requires \u2018commitment\u2019 to DEI in mission statements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>UPDATED<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>All schools must hire DEI leaders to remain accredited<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Osteopathic medical schools that want to remain accredited must show they support \u201cdiversity, equity, and inclusion\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/osteopathic.org\/index.php?aam-media=\/wp-content\/uploads\/COCA-2023-COM-Continuing-Standards.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new standards<\/a> from the accreditor of those institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The American Osteopathic Association has recently revised its accreditation standards to include DEI commitments. All of its colleges have until July 1, 2024 to become fully compliant.<\/p>\n<p>All colleges \u201cmust include a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in its mission, values, vision, goals, or objectives,\u201d according to the standards.<\/p>\n<p>They must offer an annual DEI training to all faculty and staff and \u201chave space available for use by students in a manner intended to support diversity, equity, and inclusion, and must consult with students in the process of establishing such a space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools must hire an administrator to oversee these DEI initiatives and provide resume copies for accreditation.<\/p>\n<p>The standards have drawn criticism from Do No Harm, a medical advocacy group that seeks to remove identity politics from medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s hard to say what impact this will have on schools,\u201d research director Ian Kingsbury told <em>The Fix<\/em> via a media statement. \u201cStill, it&#8217;s very clear that DEI initiatives come at the expense of merit and rigor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Last chance to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/about\/support-a-student-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support student journalists<\/a><\/span> during our Back to School fundraising campaign!
