{"id":137034,"date":"2023-11-09T00:16:51","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T05:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137034"},"modified":"2023-11-08T16:17:08","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T21:17:08","slug":"northwestern-lab-envisions-ethical-internet-without-capitalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/northwestern-lab-envisions-ethical-internet-without-capitalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Northwestern lab envisions \u2018ethical internet\u2019 without capitalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Capitalist, &#8216;military-derived technology&#8217; enables &#8216;violence,&#8217; professor says<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A Northwestern University project is described as envisioning an \u201cethical internet\u201d where capitalism is gone and \u201ccommunes\u201d work to create \u201csustainable and non-exploitative\u201d infrastructures.<\/p>\n<p>Led by communication studies Professor Moya Bailey, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackagendareport.com\/bar-book-forum-interview-moya-bailey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-described<\/a> black queer disabled woman, the \u201cEthical Internet?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalapothecary.org\/projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project<\/a> is part of the Illinois university\u2019s Digital Apothecary lab.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey, the author of &#8220;Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women\u2019s Digital Resistance,&#8221; is scheduled to speak at a <a href=\"https:\/\/college.lclark.edu\/departments\/gender_studies\/symposium\/43rd-annual-gender-studies-symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gender Studies Symposium<\/a> in March at Lewis and Clark College in Portland.<\/p>\n<p>The topic is \u201cBeing Online,\u201d and speakers will discuss how the internet has become \u201ca space for finding safety, building community, and forging feminist and LGBTQ+ resistance\u201d and how it facilitates \u201cviolence, abuse, and harassment\u201d against marginalized groups.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.northwestern.edu\/voices\/moya-bailey-misogynoir-racism-misogyny-merriam-webster-digital-apothecary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Northwestern Magazine<\/em> in a Fall 2023 feature that one of the goals of the Digital Apothecary lab \u201cis to fight against misogynoir\u201d on the internet \u201cby looking at how different platforms deal with issues of accessibility or racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lab, which began about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icahdq.org\/page\/DA_Ep0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two years ago<\/a>, is \u201cdedicated to combining ancient and new technologies in an effort to produce processes and projects that aid those most marginalized in society,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalapothecary.org\/work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to its website.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey said the internet is ethically problematic, in part, because it is capitalist, \u201cmilitary-derived technology\u201d that enables \u201cviolence\u201d around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan this military-derived, exploitatively built, capitalistically driven, entity of the internet be reconfigured from the ground up in a way that doesn\u2019t exploit human or natural resources? Can the internet be just?\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/just-tech.ssrc.org\/articles\/an-ethical-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in 2022 at <em>Just Tech<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The lab, which employs Bailey and 11 student \u201cresearch alchemists,\u201d lists &#8220;Ethical Internet?&#8221; as a current project but does not mention details about researchers&#8217; work or progress; the website only links to the 2022 column.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> contacted Bailey and the lab twice over the last month, asking for more details and updates on the project, but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> asked the lab, Bailey and the Northwestern media relations office how the lab and project are funded. None have responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3XqGtNYExdc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In her column, Bailey said ethical issues with the internet \u2013 including child labor, environmental problems and capitalism \u2013 \u201cliterally\u201d keep her up at night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there can be no ethical engagement with the internet under capitalism, I do think there is a less harmful path for our web wandering to take, one that my students and I will begin to explore in the classroom in the winter of 2022,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>While admitting her ideal internet likely will never happen, Bailey stated that she envisioned servers being built on \u201ccommunes\u201d with ethically-sourced minerals and water to cool them, along with a community of \u201cserver farmers\u201d to service them and grow food. All this would be housed on land with the consent of \u201cthe traditional stewards of the region,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe move at the speed of trust, and the speed of our circadian rhythm, remaining conscious of the pace at which we want our lives to proceed,\u201d Bailey wrote. \u201c&#8230; Kids learn to code as they learn to plant. We learn how to solder our servers, creating the technology we need at a sustainable pace. We eat well and have digital dance parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Digital Apothecary lab frequently mentions racial and gender issues on its website.<\/p>\n<p>Listed on one page is a \u201cGlossary of Terms\u201d that includes \u201cmisogynoir,\u201d a word that Bailey created to describe \u201cthe uniquely co-constitutive racialized and sexist violence that befalls Black women as a result of their simultaneous and interlocking oppression at the intersection of racial and gender marginalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bailey, in her interview with <em>Northwestern Magazine<\/em>, said one student researcher is examining the factors that make a TikTok video go viral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre videos that have hate speech perhaps more viral than others? I\u2019m really curious to see how this research might impact the design of these platforms, to better address misogynoir and other societal issues as they come up in these digital spaces,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The lab also has a \u201cValues and Principles\u201d page that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalapothecary.org\/manual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlights<\/a> \u201cSlow Work,\u201d or working \u201cthrough the ethics of pace. This means engaging in sustainable work routines, limiting lab waste, and practicing mindfulness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackagendareport.com\/bar-book-forum-interview-moya-bailey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with <em>BAR Book Forum,<\/em> Bailey said \u201cthe ethics of pace\u201d is a way to think through \u201chow I had internalized ableist expectations of my productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lab recently received funding from Labs for Liberation through the Mellon Foundation to hire a postdoctoral scholar to research and develop curriculum on \u201ccritical disability studies\u201d and \u201cBlack studies,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalapothecary.org\/were-hiring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to its website.
