{"id":137360,"date":"2023-11-15T00:05:44","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T05:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137360"},"modified":"2023-11-14T19:28:11","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T00:28:11","slug":"northwestern-project-aims-to-create-gender-bias-free-foreign-language-classes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/northwestern-project-aims-to-create-gender-bias-free-foreign-language-classes\/","title":{"rendered":"Northwestern project aims to create \u2018gender bias-free\u2019 foreign language classes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Research funded by Buffett Institute for Global Affairs<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Universities are working on ways to incorporate gender equity and inclusion into foreign language learning across the country, including one project funded by billionaire Warren Buffett\u2019s sister.<\/p>\n<p>At Northwestern University in Illinois, researchers with the <a href=\"https:\/\/buffett.northwestern.edu\/research\/global-working-groups\/language-curricula-and-gender.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Language Curricula and Gender<\/a> working group are focused on addressing inclusivity and gender equity issues in foreign language courses and curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal is to produce supplementary teaching material with a critical pedagogical approach that would make our language curricula gender bias-free and inclusive,\u201d co-lead researcher Rana Raddawi told <em>The College Fix<\/em> in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Raddawi, an associate professor of Arabic instruction, said the working group hopes their research will make an impact on language classes not just at Northwestern but across the whole world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we want to make any change in society, it should start with education,\u201d Raddawi told <em>The Fix<\/em>. \u201cLanguage teaching can be a powerful tool in equally presenting genders, gender roles, and gender identity be it through texts or visuals because language is based on communication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The working group at Northwestern is funded by the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, named after alumna Roberta Buffett Elliott who donated $100 million for its creation in 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northwestern.edu\/stories\/2015\/01\/roberta-buffett-elliott-donates-more-than-100-million-to-northwestern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the university news. Buffett Elliott is the sister of billionaire Warren Buffett, currently the sixth richest American, <em>Forbes<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/real-time-billionaires\/#7a3805c03d78\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marcelo Worsley, the co-lead researcher on the project and associate professor of computer science, did not respond to requests for comment from <em>The Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not inclusive to have a class and now be told, \u2018Sorry, you have to choose between one of these pronouns,\u2019\u201d Worsley <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2023\/10\/09\/campus\/language-curricula-and-gender-working-group-promotes-inclusivity-in-language-instruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> <em>The Daily Northwestern<\/em> student newspaper in October. \u201cHow do we make sure especially our LGBTQ+ students are feeling included in these language classes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least one other university already is incorporating some of these ideas into language courses.<\/p>\n<p>Susquehanna University, a private institution in Pennsylvania, offered a class this fall on \u201cDiversity, Politics, and Social Factors\u201d for English Learners in Education. According to the fall course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susqu.edu\/live\/files\/797-202324-course-catalog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catalog<\/a>, \u201cLearning a language is not a politically neutral enterprise: Issues of power are related to who is encouraged to learn a language and who is prevented from accessing linguistic resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an email to <em>The Fix<\/em>, Annemieke Stassel, class instructor and adjunct professor for the English Language Learners Program, said students are taught how languages influence \u201cthe classroom culture, climate and pedagogy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Language learning \u201cis not a politically neutral system as there are myriad influences from policies to schools, to teachers, families, and students\u201d that can affect how a new language is learned, Stassel told <em>The Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Giancarlo Canaparo, senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation\u2019s Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, told <em>The Fix<\/em> that the DEI ideology is seeping into every area of higher education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo field of study is free from the oppressor-oppressed narrative these days,\u201d Canaparo said via email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who buy into it, rightly see language as a key source of power because if you can control what people can and cannot say, you can influence what they will and will not think,\u201d Canaparo told <em>The College Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At Northwestern, Spanish and Portuguese Professor Shannon Millikin, who is involved in the Language Curricula and Gender working group, admitted to the student newspaper that there are challenges to their work.<\/p>\n<p>In Spanish, for example, Millikin said gender neutrality is difficult, noting \u201cthe use of an \u2018e\u2019 at the end of a word, like \u2018Latine,\u2019 is more prevalent in academia than in the broader Spanish-speaking community,\u201d according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t control language,\u201d Millikin said. \u201cLanguage is a living, evolving thing used by millions and millions of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, Heritage\u2019s Canaparo said he anticipates that the greatest legal battles related to DEI will occur in the employment context.
