{"id":137386,"date":"2023-11-15T00:12:30","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T05:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137386"},"modified":"2023-11-17T09:01:38","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T14:01:38","slug":"we-are-butchering-children-conference-proposes-alternative-to-gender-ideology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/we-are-butchering-children-conference-proposes-alternative-to-gender-ideology\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We are butchering children&#8217;: Academics unite against &#8216;medical transitioning&#8217; of kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8216;The premise of the current \u2018gender-affirming\u2019 model of care is unsound and leads to serious harm,&#8217; conference participant and biologist said<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Academics, clinicians, writers, and others critical of contemporary gender ideology gathered in Denver at a conference hosted by an international group opposing \u201cgender-affirming care\u201d for children.<\/p>\n<p>Genspect launched its \u201cBigger Picture Conference\u201d Nov. 4-5 to advance its mission and build community. The group formed in 2021 \u201cas a coalition of parent and professional groups, united in concern about the inappropriate social and medical transitioning of young people questioning their gender,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/genspect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conference organizers invited 20 speakers on topics ranging from psychology, education reform, detransition accounts, and gender identity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121771 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heatherheying-370x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heatherheying-370x242.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heatherheying-560x367.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heatherheying-135x88.jpg 135w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heatherheying.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/>Among that lineup was evolutionary biologist Heather Heying, formerly a professor at Evergreen State College. She agreed to speak at the conference \u201centhusiastically and without hesitation\u201d because \u201cwe are butchering children and there is no excuse,\u201d she told<em> The College Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Heying went to the conference to \u201cprovide scientific findings and language for parents and young people\u2026 to gain an understanding of biology and human complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We should understand reality (sex is binary, differences between the sexes are real), and not fight that reality, but also know what we can actually change a lot about ourselves that seems unchangeable,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Heying and her husband, fellow former Evergreen State College Professor Bret Weinstein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/12-countercultural-female-scholars-to-watch-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">co-host<\/a> the popular \u201cDarkHorse\u201d podcast exploring life from an evolutionary perspective and criticizing social justice taboos.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, baseball-bat wielding protesters at Evergreen State surrounded and threatened Professor Weinstein, who is white, for refusing to leave campus for a day of sensitivity trainings alongside his white peers during the school\u2019s annual \u201cDay of Absence,&#8221; <em>The Fix<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/as-evergreen-states-enrollment-continues-to-tank-it-hosts-white-blaming-equity-symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> at the time. Both Weinstein and Heying resigned shortly after.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kEGOJyqUdRY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In its Sept. 19 <a href=\"https:\/\/genspect.org\/genspect-releases-full-programme-for-denver-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> about the conference, Genspect stated, \u201cTraditional exploratory psychotherapy for gender-distressed youth must replace affirmative care, of course, and a rigorous scientific method must continue challenging the shoddy evidence base for activist-driven gender medicine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of the event, the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/genspect\/status\/1720814956088643878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a> that tickets had sold out.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Byrne, professor of philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, went to the conference in hope of demonstrating \u201chow philosophy can make a contribution to debates about sex and gender,\u201d he told<em> The Fix<\/em> in an email. His upcoming book, &#8220;Trouble with Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions,&#8221; is a critique of \u201cthe new gender revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bryne was drawn to speak at the conference by the \u201cgreat lineup of thoughtful presenters, who collectively {came] with a huge amount of expertise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Colin Wright, a Manhattan Institute Fellow and member of Genspect\u2019s The Killarney Group think tank, told <em>The Fix<\/em> his conference presentation focused on dispelling \u201ccommon arguments forwarded by gender activists claiming that \u2018there are more than two sexes\u2019 and that \u2018sex is a spectrum.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The premise of the current \u2018gender-affirming\u2019 model of care is unsound and leads to serious harm,&#8221; Wright said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Conference advanced alternative to transgender &#8216;standards of care&#8217; that opposed age limits for drugs and surgery<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wright told<em> The Fix<\/em> that Genspect\u2019s efforts are \u201cgroundbreaking\u201d because \u201cfor so long there had been no organized pushback to WPATH&#8217;s highly medicalized Standards of Care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WPATH\u2019s Standards of Care 8 is \u201cbased on the best available science and expert professional consensus\u201d and provides \u201cclinical guidance\u201d for \u201csafe and effective pathways to achieving lasting personal comfort with [patients&#8217;] gendered selves,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpath.org\/publications\/soc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Genspect Vice-Director Alasdair Gunn <a href=\"https:\/\/genspect.org\/introduction-to-the-gender-framework\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a Nov. 3 website post that the Standards of Care is a \u201ca wildly ideological document.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ethics chapter, though already written, which appeared in the publicly available draft, was deleted,\u201d he wrote. \u201cAlso deleted were all recommendations regarding minimum age limits for medical transition (with the exception of phalloplasty, which is reserved for those over the age of 18 due to the complexity of the procedure).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Perhaps most frighteningly, the concept of a &#8216;eunuch gender identity&#8217; was advanced, with a view to normalizing the removal of the testes alone in males, leaving the penis in place,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>At the conference, Genspect doctors, academics and other experts drafted \u201cThe Gender Framework,\u201d an alternative guide to gender dysphoria that affirms biological reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere SOC 8 facilitates medical transition, the Gender Framework presents a comprehensive, non-medical means of dealing with distress about gender issues,\u201d Gunn wrote regarding the document.<\/p>\n<p>Genspect plans to officially launch the Gender Framework at their conference in Lisbon, Portugal in September 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/uva-students-protest-author-of-book-on-teen-transgender-phenomenon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UVA students protest author of book on teen transgender phenomenon<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Editor\u2019s Note:<\/strong> <em>An earlier version of this article had a different headline.
