{"id":137417,"date":"2023-11-16T00:02:02","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T05:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137417"},"modified":"2023-11-16T13:09:08","modified_gmt":"2023-11-16T18:09:08","slug":"university-of-michigan-dei-2-0-aims-at-university-overhaul-global-transformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/university-of-michigan-dei-2-0-aims-at-university-overhaul-global-transformation\/","title":{"rendered":"UMich looks to advance DEI in every part of university over next 5 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8216;Process&#8217; goals aim at &#8216;creating effective systems for reporting bias,&#8217; and &#8216;establishing dedicated DEI committees and\/or roles with new levels of accountability&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The University of Michigan launched a five-year effort to integrate DEI into every aspect of the university and beyond, including through hiring committed faculty, bias reporting, and &#8220;de-emphasizing singular Western historical narratives&#8221; in an architecture program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The University of Michigan\u2019s second five-year strategic plan for diversity, equity and inclusion will help propel the institution toward a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive future,&#8221; according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/dei-2-0-outlines-u-ms-diverse-inclusive-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> in <em>The University Record<\/em>, the school&#8217;s news website.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> reached out to the U-M public affairs office and received an email from Director Kim Broekhuizen, who directed <em>The Fix<\/em> to <em>The University Record<\/em> article and did not comment further.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> also reached out twice by email to School of Information Assistant Dean for Diversity Judy Schabel, Associate Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion and Deputy Chief Diversity Officer Katrina Wade-Golden, Provost Laurie McCauley, and Spokesman Rick Fitzgerald. None responded.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/report.dei.umich.edu\/2023-dei-2-plan-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DEI 2.0<\/a> Plan &#8220;launched earlier [in October] after more than a year of planning and community engagement,&#8221; according to the news release. The program \u201cprovides an opportunity where the 51 units across campus are able to refine their strategic approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion work for their students, faculty, and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U-M Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer Tabbeye Chavous said the university was implementing DEI 2.0 in part to \u201cmove toward a process of institutional change and global transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DEI 2.0 Plan &#8220;launches with plans provided by central administration and by the 51 university units throughout U-M.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">U-M\u2019s five-year strategic plan for diversity, equity, and inclusion will help propel the institution toward a more welcoming, diverse, and inclusive future. Members of the U-M community learned about DEI 2.0 during the info session last week. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vQDQakweVo\">https:\/\/t.co\/vQDQakweVo<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kGySYTylJw\">pic.twitter.com\/kGySYTylJw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; University of Michigan (@UMich) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UMich\/status\/1716842484116885621?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 24, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cGoal: People\u201d section of the DEI 2.0 61-page plan states it is committed to building \u201ca critical mass of diverse groups on campus and to provide those groups with vital resources and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Activities and initiatives for \u201cclimate building\u201d under DEI 2.0\u2019s goal \u201cProcess&#8221; include \u201ccreating effective systems for reporting bias,\u201d and \u201cestablishing dedicated DEI committees and\/or roles with new levels of accountability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProcess\u201d also involves \u201cEnhancing Religious, Spiritual &amp; Interfaith Diversity on Campus\u201d and \u201cDEI Education and Training Resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan plans to accomplish \u201ccurriculum reform\u201d as a part of the goal \u201cProduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curriculum reform includes \u201cde-emphasizing the singular Western historical narratives of design education,\u201d and \u201ccentering the global South and historically marginalized populations in particular,\u201d among other initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>One DEI 2.0 health and sciences plan alone will cost nearly $80 million, including a $15.8 million investment from the National Institutes of Health and a $63.7 million investment from the University of Michigan, <em>The Fix <\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/umich-nih-to-spend-nearly-80-million-as-part-of-dei-2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in July. The program aims to \u201cenhance inclusion and equity across the biomedical and health sciences community&#8221; and will \u201caddress persistent and significant underrepresentation of minoritized individuals and groups,&#8221; according to a June <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/u-m-nih-invest-79m-for-dei-in-biomedical-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> in <em>The University Record. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Vice Provost Chavous is leading the efforts, according to the DEI office <a href=\"https:\/\/odei.umich.edu\/2023\/06\/29\/a-message-from-vice-provost-tabbye-chavous-on-the-recent-supreme-court-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chavous\u2019 husband, Robert Sellers, was vice provost for equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer during the launch of DEI 1.0, before stepping down in 2021, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/sellers-announces-end-of-tenure-as-chief-diversity-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> reached out to Chavous and Sellers for comment twice each by email over the past several days. Neither responded.<\/p>\n<p>The DEI 2.0 Plan also states that the program will extend beyond the university.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/report.dei.umich.edu\/2023-dei-2-plan-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan document<\/a>, DEI 2.0 aims to \u201cenhance the learning experience for students nationwide,\u201d in addition to students of U-M,.
