{"id":137709,"date":"2023-11-22T00:02:15","date_gmt":"2023-11-22T05:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137709"},"modified":"2023-11-21T13:11:56","modified_gmt":"2023-11-21T18:11:56","slug":"gen-z-wants-action-movies-not-woke-storylines-ucla-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/gen-z-wants-action-movies-not-woke-storylines-ucla-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Gen Z wants action movies, not woke storylines: UCLA study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Black adolescents also want to see white people portrayed as villains<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gen Z would rather see movies that show two men fighting each other, rather than kissing one another, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/633f0603fdaa7311ba384d21\/t\/65388d5f0e3d4d7ecad18fc9\/1698205028227\/Teens+%26+Screens+2023+Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new survey<\/a> from the University of California Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The younger, college-aged generation ranked superhero movies and action films high in their interest list, along with \u201chopeful, uplifting content with people beating the odds\u201d and \u201cpeople with lives like my own\u201d according to the survey.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, \u201cNonbinary and LGBTQIA+ Identities\u201d is ranked at the bottom, according to the survey from UCLA&#8217;s Center for Scholars and Storytellers.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 1,500 people also found Gen Z is not interested in sexual content, which may explain their lack of interest in LGBT identity-focused programming.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents reported that they use entertainment media \u201cto escape and take my mind off of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Storylines about political content such as \u201cracial minorities,\u201d \u201cclimate change,\u201d and \u201cimmigration\u201d do not make the top 10 ranking.<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, \u201c47.5% of adolescents said that sex isn\u2019t needed for the plot of most TV shows and movies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that young people are suffering an epidemic of loneliness and they\u2019re seeking modeling in the art they consume,\u201d researcher Yalda Uhls stated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/adolescents-prefer-less-sex-more-friendships-on-screen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a>. \u201cWhile some storytellers use sex and romance as a shortcut to character connection, it\u2019s important for Hollywood to recognize that adolescents want stories that reflect the full spectrum of relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UCLA researchers did not respond to two requests for comment sent in the past two weeks that asked about why respondents are not interested in LGBT content. The team told <em>The College Fix<\/em> on Nov. 16 it would ask the media department to comment, but it did not provide answers.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fix<\/em> also asked about why racial minorities may have wanted to see white people cast as the villain.<\/p>\n<p>Cultural critic and former English professor Mark Bauerlein said the survey results could be positive or negative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not sure how to interpret the findings,\u201d he told <em>The Fix<\/em> via email. \u201cFor instance, we have a preference for more non-erotic relationships in media, more friendships and less sex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does this mean, though: Is it a healthy recoil from the relentless and shallow sex stuff in media?
