{"id":137746,"date":"2023-11-20T15:33:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T20:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137746"},"modified":"2023-11-20T15:33:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T20:33:59","slug":"forty-pro-palestinian-protesters-arrested-at-university-of-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/forty-pro-palestinian-protesters-arrested-at-university-of-michigan\/","title":{"rendered":"Forty pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at University of Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Some protesters forced their way into a campus building, occupied it for several hours<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>University of Michigan police arrested 40 people on campus Friday after breaking up a pro-Palestinian protest of hundreds, some of whom had forced their way into an administrative building.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At least 200 people gathered Friday, calling for the university to divest from Israel,&#8221; <em>Michigan Live<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/2023\/11\/40-pro-palestinian-protesters-arrested-at-university-of-michigan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Saturday. &#8220;Around 4 p.m., the demonstrators moved from the central campus Diag area to the Ruthven Administration Building.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian advocacy group University of Michigan Students Allied for Freedom and Equality organized the protest.<\/p>\n<p>The group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CzuBDOIAAGO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> Thursday to Instagram, &#8220;on tomorrow\u2019s Global Day of Action to #shutitdown4palestine, join us and our coalition in demanding that the university divest from companies that fund and participate in the genocide of the Palestinian people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After making their way to the locked Ruthven building, which campus officials guarded, some protesters forced their way inside and occupied it for approximately five hours, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BGOnTheScene\/status\/1725638264512549160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1725638264512549160%7Ctwgr%5E6897030192ef2d50d9eb98ebee66b8bd59f7fd84%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thecollegefix.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost-new.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> posted to X by Brendan Gutenschwager and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2023\/11\/19\/pro-palestinian-students-arrested-u-m-admin-building\/71636387007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Detroit Free Press<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Outnumbered police attempt to block pro-Palestinian demonstrators from entering the Ruthven Building at the University of Michigan, protesters make their way past and enter <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Yd4sM1sSef\">pic.twitter.com\/Yd4sM1sSef<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Brendan Gutenschwager (@BGOnTheScene) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BGOnTheScene\/status\/1725638264512549160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 17, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hundreds of students demanding a meeting with [university President Santa] Ono gained access to the building, which police said had been locked,&#8221; the <em>Free Press<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 40 students were arrested, given tickets and released.<\/p>\n<p>A network of 55 U. Mich. groups, including SAFE UMich and Students for Justice in Palestine, have demanded the University of Michigan divest from companies affiliated with the Israeli military, particularly Hewlett Packard, Lockheed Martin, and the Boeing Company. They have also called on university leaders to call Israel&#8217;s military actions in Gaza a genocide.<\/p>\n<p>SAFE Mich. posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CzzVz0kvSOi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> alleging police violence at the protest to Instagram Sunday, along with a video of a chaotic scene. The video shows a woman lying on the building floor in handcuffs, though it is not clear from the footage what happened just before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;STUDENT PROTESTER WAS VIOLENTLY BODY SLAMMED TO THE GROUND AND HANDCUFFED,&#8221;
