{"id":137759,"date":"2023-11-21T00:05:43","date_gmt":"2023-11-21T05:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137759"},"modified":"2023-11-22T16:06:11","modified_gmt":"2023-11-22T21:06:11","slug":"usc-professor-banished-from-campus-after-anti-hamas-comments-go-viral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/usc-professor-banished-from-campus-after-anti-hamas-comments-go-viral\/","title":{"rendered":"USC professor banished from campus after anti-Hamas comments go viral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An economics professor from the University of Southern California is required to teach via Zoom for the rest of the fall semester after a heated exchange with a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators, prompting an academic freedom group to demand his full reinstatement.<\/p>\n<p>Tenured Professor John Strauss, who is Jewish, \u201cwill be teaching his two classes remotely for the rest of the semester,\u201d USC said in a statement to <em>The College Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At issue is an early November interaction the professor had with students engaged in a protest organized by USC Student Coalition Against Labor Exploitation, USC Graduates for Palestine, and Trojans for Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>In an original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=978k1yK7zt0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unedited video<\/a> of the exchange, Strauss can be heard saying \u201cpeople are ignorant\u201d as he walked by, adding \u201cHamas are murderers. That\u2019s all they are. Every one should be killed, and I hope they all are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instagram accounts @uscgraduatesforpalestine and @uscscale posted a shorter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CzfIQGfJr3b\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">edited video<\/a> to their accounts on Nov. 9 with student faces blurred. In the video, Strauss\u2019s comments about Hamas were edited out, leaving only his words, \u201cevery one should be killed, and I hope they all are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same edited video, which has now attracted over 2 million views on X, was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/taraxrh\/status\/1723062614295445678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> by activist Tara Alami, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/569810\/usc-professor-leave-pro-palestinian-protest-john-strauss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> <em>Forward<\/em>. The edited version was also posted to larger accounts @cravingpalestine and @shaunking.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">here is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@USC<\/a> professor John Strauss saying \u201cevery one of them should be killed, and I hope they all are\u201d while passing by students who organised a memorial for 10,000+ Palestinian martyrs killed in the past month <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Iuox2laMKL\">pic.twitter.com\/Iuox2laMKL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; tara (@taraxrh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/taraxrh\/status\/1723062614295445678?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Strauss clarified his comments in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=69OSR3vb_yY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> posted to YouTube on Nov. 14 with <em>Annenberg Media<\/em> in which he said their initial coverage of the incident misrepresented what occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery one of them, of course, referred to Hamas,\u201d Strauss told the outlet. \u201cThen that later was changed to, in the video that was released publicly that was heavily doctored, to Palestinians should be murdered. And that\u2019s not what I said at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe video that was put out there by the pro-Palestinian students was doctored and claimed I said things that I never meant,\u201d Strauss said. \u201cI\u2019ve asked the administration and the provost\u2019s office to make a statement to that effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/978k1yK7zt0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Two petitions have gained momentum on social media, one in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/demand-usc-to-bring-back-jewish-professor-john-strauss-on-campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support of Strauss<\/a>, which currently has over 9,000 signatures, and one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/demand-the-termination-of-usc-economics-professor-john-strauss-for-racist-and-xenophobic-behavior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demanding his termination<\/a>, with over 6,500 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>The petition in support of Strauss demands a complete review of the incident, and reexamination of university policies regarding professor suspensions.<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Strauss said he first encountered the protest on the way to teach his class, when he heard the students shouting \u201cfrom the river to the sea,\u201d which he said is code for the destruction of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>He said he responded by yelling back, \u201cIsrael forever. Hamas are murderers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After teaching his class, Strauss told<em> Annenberg Media<\/em> he had stopped to talk with a group of Jewish students when a woman yelled, \u201cShame on you Professor Strauss. Shame on you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strauss said he responded back, \u201cNo, shame on you,\u201d afterwhich, protesters could be seen in the video moving closer to Strauss. According to a detailed timeline in the petition calling for Strauss\u2019s reinstatement, a protester moved \u201caggressively\u201d toward Strauss and students had to hold the person back.<\/p>\n<p>Strauss, who was also accused of intentionally stepping on signs containing the names of dead Palestinian civilians, said in the <em>Annenberg<\/em> interview that it was not intentional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I heard someone yell, \u2018shame on you Professor Strauss,\u2019 so I moved towards that person, and then I must have stepped on a sign or two,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Following the dispute, USC put Strauss on paid administrative leave on Nov. 10, <em>Annenberg Media<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscannenbergmedia.com\/2023\/11\/13\/professor-put-on-leave-of-absence-defends-his-language-at-pro-palestinian-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. The university then allowed him to continue teaching his graduate course via zoom, and in the interview with <em>Annenberg Media<\/em>, Strauss said he is now able to teach his undergraduate course online as well.<\/p>\n<p>A university statement <a href=\"https:\/\/dailytrojan.com\/2023\/11\/15\/professor-strauss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made to<\/a> the <em>Daily Trojan<\/em> states Strauss is not on administrative leave, just teaching remotely.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/academicfreedom.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Freedom Alliance<\/a>, a coalition of college and university faculty focused on protecting freedom of expression, issued a letter to USC Provost Andrew Guzman on behalf of Strauss, calling for his immediate reinstatement.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, obtained by <em>The College Fix<\/em>, states \u201cthe university\u2019s actions represent an egregious violation of the principles of freedom of expression and due process which the University of Southern California has contractually committed itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter also stated that Strauss\u2019s comments are \u201cfully in bounds of protected First Amendment speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the videos of his comments went viral, Strauss said in the interview he has received an influx of emails, including statements like, \u201cI hope you die fascist pig\u201d and \u201cPalestine forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked in retrospect if he would approach the situation differently, Strauss said no.<\/p>\n<p>Howard Muncy, director of operations for Academic Freedom Alliance, told <em>The College Fix<\/em> that the organization has not received a reply from their letter.<\/p>\n<p>Strauss did not respond to a request for comment from <em>The College Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Asked by NBC whether he was removed from campus for his safety, Strauss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/on-air\/newsconference-usc-professor-speaks-out\/3272345\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cthat is maybe part of it, it\u2019s a little hard to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI am very unhappy that the administration is not supporting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The embattled professor has some supporters among faculty, including USC chemistry Professor Anna Krylov, a vocal proponent of campus free speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy opinion is that Prof. Strauss should be reinstated immediately and that apologies are due for the disruption, and emotional and reputational damage that this involuntary administrative leave has caused him,\u201d she told <em>The College Fix<\/em> via email.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/forty-pro-palestinian-protesters-arrested-at-university-of-michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forty pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at University of Michigan<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IMAGE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/on-air\/newsconference-usc-professor-speaks-out\/3272345\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC Los Angeles screenshot<\/a><\/p>\n            <div class=\"article-truncate-control\">\n                <button class=\"show-complete-article\">\n                    Read More                <\/button>\n            <\/div>\n\n        ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;I am very unhappy that the administration is not supporting me,&#8217;
