{"id":137987,"date":"2023-11-27T10:07:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:07:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=137987"},"modified":"2023-11-27T10:11:53","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:11:53","slug":"british-museum-claims-3rd-century-roman-emperor-was-trans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/british-museum-claims-3rd-century-roman-emperor-was-trans\/","title":{"rendered":"British museum claims 3rd century Roman emperor was trans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Claims of female identification come from palace aide who may have had ulterior motives<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A teenage male Roman emperor actually identified as a woman, a British museum now claims.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that Elagabalus identified as a woman and was explicit about which pronouns to use, which shows that pronouns are not a new thing,&#8221; Keith Hoskins, a member of the council that runs the North Hertfordshire Museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/11\/20\/trans-roman-emperor-hitchin-museum-claim-pronouns-woke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0<em>The Telegraph<\/em>. The emperor ruled from 218 to 222.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We try to be sensitive to identifying pronouns for people in the past, as we are for people in the present,&#8221; Hoskins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/11\/20\/trans-roman-emperor-hitchin-museum-claim-pronouns-woke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But scholars question the basis for these claims of transgenderism, noting a history of wild stories being told about the teenage emperor. Furthermore, the claims that Elagabalus (<em>bust pictured<\/em>) used female pronouns comes from Cassius Dio, a chronicler who worked for Elagabalus&#8217; successor and rival.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>New York Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/21\/news\/uk-museum-says-roman-emperor-was-a-trans-woman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The idea that Elagabalus identified as a woman comes from the writings of Roman chronicler Cassius Dio, who claimed that that emperor was \u201ctermed wife, mistress and queen,\u201d and told one lover, \u201cCall me not Lord, for I am a Lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to ancient texts, Elagabalus married multiple women, but only for the purpose of learning their bedroom habits, and also tied the knot with a male chariot driver.<\/p>\n<p>Elagabalus also known to have often worn wigs and makeup, allegedly moonlighted as a female prostitute in Rome\u2019s brothels, and offered large sums of money to any doctor who could perform a gender reassignment surgery by creating a vagina.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But being called a woman was meant as an insult, according to a University of Cambridge classicist. &#8220;The Romans didn\u2019t have our idea of \u2018trans\u2019 as a category, but they used accusations of sexual behavior \u2018as a woman\u2019 as one of the worst insults against men,&#8221; Andrew Wallace-Hadrill told\u00a0<em>The Telegraph<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Christian Laes, a University of Manchester classics professor, also urged cautioned when it came to stories about the former emperor.<\/p>\n<p>Other tales about the emperor include that he released deadly snakes on a party and threw coins into a crowd to watch people fight for them.<\/p>\n<p>Claims that historical figures could have been gay or transgender is nothing new. For example, another British museum included poet Alfred Lord Tennyson&#8217;s home on an LGBT walking tour list, despite there being no evidence he was gay, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/in-queering-history-scholars-exchange-facts-for-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously reported<\/a> by\u00a0<em>The College Fix<\/em>. The claim is based on his close friendship with a male poet. Tennyson was married to a woman.
