{"id":138061,"date":"2023-11-28T14:44:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-28T19:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=138061"},"modified":"2023-11-28T14:44:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T19:44:00","slug":"professor-vandalism-smoke-bombs-at-jewish-leaders-home-pretty-cool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/professor-vandalism-smoke-bombs-at-jewish-leaders-home-pretty-cool\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor: Vandalism, smoke bombs at Jewish leader\u2019s home \u2018pretty cool\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Los Angeles police investigating vandalism as possible hate crime<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A professor at Washington University in St. Louis praised pro-Palestinian protesters who vandalized a Jewish leader\u2019s home on Thanksgiving morning, describing the smoke bombs and paint damage as \u201cpretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anthropology Professor Bret Gustafson supported the vandalism targeting American Israel Public Affairs Committee President Michael Tuchin\u2019s home in Brentwood, California, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1729509403676598707\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">screenshots<\/a> on X <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StopAntisemites\/status\/1729195853087166925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared<\/a> by Stop Antisemitism and Libs of TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPretty cool I\u2019d say. Let those who enable mass murder not live in peace,\u201d Gustafson wrote.<\/p>\n<p>His comment appeared under a post by Peter Beinart, the editor-at-large of the <em>Jewish Currents<\/em>, who shared news about the Los Angeles Police Department investigating the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many appropriate ways to protest AIPAC. This isn\u2019t one of them. I really hope this never happens again,\u201d Beinart <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterBeinart\/status\/1728583760713793584\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bret Gustafson, Associate Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, says setting off gas canisters outside the homes of Jews is &quot;pretty cool&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>LAPD are investigating it as a possible hate crime.<\/p>\n<p>Are Jewish students safe in his classroom <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WUSTL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WUSTL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WashUChancellor?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WashUChancellor<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wpwxY2Mhrk\">pic.twitter.com\/wpwxY2Mhrk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; StopAntisemitism (@StopAntisemites) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StopAntisemites\/status\/1729195853087166925?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But Gustafson disagreed, telling Beinart: \u201cNobody was harmed. It\u2019s an escrache tactic. (Look it up).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Escrache refers to actions to shame and punish prominent leaders who protesters believe are guilty of human rights abuses but are not being held accountable by the justice system.<\/p>\n<p>At Tuchin\u2019s home, protesters set off smoke bombs and threw red paint on the driveway, and a neighbor who confronted the group said he was hit with a steel pole, <em>NBC Los Angeles<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/demonstrators-set-off-smoke-devices-throw-paint-at-brentwood-home-of-aipac-president\/3276196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>. Some protesters carried a banner that read, &#8220;F&#8212; your holiday, baby killer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Police said they are investigating acts of vandalism, hate crime, and assault with a deadly weapon, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/brentwood-pro-palestinian-protest-jewish-family\/14100225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to <em>ABC 7<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Gustafson\u2019s comment praising the vandalism no longer appears on the thread, and his X profile is now private.<\/p>\n<p>Stop Antisemitism questioned if Jewish students feel safe in the professor\u2019s classroom. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StopAntisemites\/status\/1729504166723158118\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> Tuesday on X, the organization said one of Gustafson\u2019s students sent images of his classroom materials that refer to Israeli Jews as \u201cJewish settlers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One image that appears to be from a test mentions \u201cPalestinians and Jewish settlers\u201d in reference to the formation of the country of Israel.
