{"id":138124,"date":"2023-11-29T15:35:07","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T20:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=138124"},"modified":"2023-11-29T20:52:38","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T01:52:38","slug":"univ-removes-dolphin-from-school-logo-because-it-belonged-to-slave-trader-300-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/univ-removes-dolphin-from-school-logo-because-it-belonged-to-slave-trader-300-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"Univ. removes dolphin from logo because it belonged to slave trader 300+ years ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A university in the UK is excising a dolphin emblem from its school logo because it belonged to a slave trader who died two centuries before the university was even founded.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Bristol dolphin emblem<em>\u00a0<\/em>belonged to Edward Colston, whose wealth derived from the slave trade but eventually was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collection\/term\/BIOG133284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bequeathed<\/a> to &#8220;schools, almshouses, churches and hospitals&#8221; in the town of Bristol.<\/p>\n<p>The school&#8217;s logo <em>(pictured) <\/em>was created twenty years ago and is based on Bristol&#8217;s 1909 foundational coat of arms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/edward-colston-bristol-university-bristol-black-lives-matter-african-b2454647.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <em>Independent<\/em><\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>A statute of Colston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/professor-accuses-peer-of-racism-for-describing-mixed-race-scholar-as-eloquent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was toppled<\/a> three years ago during a Black Lives Matter protest.<\/p>\n<p>U. Bristol President Evelyn Welch announced the emblem removal on November 28 while also apologizing &#8220;to those who had experienced racism&#8221; at the school.<\/p>\n<p>The emblems of two other families &#8212; the Wills (sun) and Frys (horse) &#8212; will remain on the logo as those individuals &#8220;did not own or traffic&#8221; in slaves. However, they did profit from products connected to slavery such as tobacco, sugar and cocoa, and the university will work to &#8220;ensure the full stories of [its] origins, both positive and negative, are made more visible,\u201d a school spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>The Wills and Frys names also will remain on campus buildings as they &#8220;helped found the university in the early 20th century through substantial financial gifts,\u201d the spokesman added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/college-removes-colony-name-from-dorm-over-terms-loose-connection-to-slavery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College removes \u2018colony\u2019 name from dorm over term\u2019s loose connection to slavery<\/a><\/p>\n<p>U. Bristol will engage in a new ten million-pound initiative called &#8220;Reparative Futures&#8221; to &#8220;address racial injustice and inequalities internally and in local communities [the university] works with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/edward-colston-bristol-university-bristol-black-lives-matter-african-b2454647.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From the story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Reparative Futures will build on a number of initiatives the university has invested in over the past few years, such as the Black Scholarships Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>A community fund will be created for proposals from local groups to work with\u00a0Bristol University\u00a0staff on education and research initiatives to tackle educational, health and economic inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>Partners and experts from ethnically diverse communities will be appointed to support Reparative Futures, the university said. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout, I heard many distressing stories from those who had experienced racism and racist behaviours while engaging with, working at, or studying at the University of Bristol,\u201d Prof Welch said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat began as a consultation on our history and building renaming became a powerful platform to expose deep hurt and frustration with our slow progress and commitment to racial equity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Colston&#8217;s dolphin met the same fate as Robert E.
