{"id":138182,"date":"2023-11-30T08:15:56","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T13:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=138182"},"modified":"2023-11-30T08:15:56","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T13:15:56","slug":"using-trans-persons-birth-name-is-violent-act-mit-module","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/using-trans-persons-birth-name-is-violent-act-mit-module\/","title":{"rendered":"Using trans person&#8217;s birth name is &#8216;violent act&#8217;: MIT module"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8216;Deadnaming&#8217; is &#8216;violent act,&#8217; can &#8216;trigger a trauma response&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A professor who calls a person by their birth name and not their new chosen name commits a &#8220;violent act,&#8221; according to an LGBT training offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;LGBTQ 101+&#8221; training is one of three sexual harassment modules offered to faculty, staff, and graduate students at the private university in Cambridge. <em>The Daily Wir<\/em>e obtained and<em>\u00a0<\/em>reviewed the full training module.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Daily Wire<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mit-presses-students-and-faculty-to-take-radical-lgbtq-101-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One portion discusses and defines the concept of \u201cdeadnaming,\u201d using the birth and often legal name of an individual who identifies as transgender and who has taken on a new name. The training defines it as \u201cthe act of referring to a transgender or nonbinary person by a name they used prior to transitioning.\u201d It even goes on to say \u201cdeadnaming is invalidating and may trigger a trauma response\u201d and warns against \u201cmisgendering.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Calling someone by their birth name, &#8220;brings all of their negative life experience with that name to the surface \u2026 it is considered a violent act.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The training repeats other regular LGBT talking points, including that &#8220;gender&#8221; and &#8220;sex&#8221; are different and that &#8220;gender is a spectrum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, the term &#8220;gender&#8221; was not traditionally understood as distinct from &#8220;sex.&#8221; Instead, people would use the term to avoid saying &#8220;sex&#8221; in conversation, given the dual meaning of the word, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/gender-ideology-is-a-new-form-of-gnosticism-catholic-professor-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Professor John Grabowski<\/a> at the Catholic University of America.<\/p>\n<p>MIT personnel should ensure their workplaces are &#8220;affirming,&#8221; according to the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Daily Wire<\/em> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Staff and faculty are also instructed to make their workplaces more \u201caffirming\u201d by using certain terms and avoiding others. \u201cProvide space regularly in your lab\/department\/office\/classrooms to share their pronouns.
