‘Deadnaming’ is ‘violent act,’ can ‘trigger a trauma response’<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A professor who calls a person by their birth name and not their new chosen name commits a “violent act,” according to an LGBT training offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n

The “LGBTQ 101+” training is one of three sexual harassment modules offered to faculty, staff, and graduate students at the private university in Cambridge. The Daily Wir<\/em>e obtained and\u00a0<\/em>reviewed the full training module.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Daily Wire<\/em> reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n

One portion discusses and defines the concept of \u201cdeadnaming,\u201d using the birth and often legal name of an individual who identifies as transgender and who has taken on a new name. The training defines it as \u201cthe act of referring to a transgender or nonbinary person by a name they used prior to transitioning.\u201d It even goes on to say \u201cdeadnaming is invalidating and may trigger a trauma response\u201d and warns against \u201cmisgendering.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Calling someone by their birth name, “brings all of their negative life experience with that name to the surface \u2026 it is considered a violent act.”<\/p>\n

The training repeats other regular LGBT talking points, including that “gender” and “sex” are different and that “gender is a spectrum.”<\/p>\n

However, the term “gender” was not traditionally understood as distinct from “sex.” Instead, people would use the term to avoid saying “sex” in conversation, given the dual meaning of the word, according to Professor John Grabowski<\/a> at the Catholic University of America.<\/p>\n

MIT personnel should ensure their workplaces are “affirming,” according to the presentation.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Daily Wire<\/em> reported:<\/p>\n

Staff and faculty are also instructed to make their workplaces more \u201caffirming\u201d by using certain terms and avoiding others. \u201cProvide space regularly in your lab\/department\/office\/classrooms to share their pronouns. Avoid using binary gendered language \u2026 instead use \u2018they\u2019 and \u2018people\u2019 as gender neutral terms,\u201d the training says.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you a visible, dependable ally?\u201d the training asks. \u201cWhat have you done recently, or what are you planning on doing, that can contribute to a feeling of LGBTQ+ belonging at MIT?\u201d<\/p>\n

A portion titled \u201clet\u2019s talk about allyship\u201d assures trainees that \u201cthere are many different forms of allyship\u201d before explaining \u201cqueer cisgender people can be an ally to trans and non-binary individuals\u201d and \u201cwhite queer and heterosexual individuals can be an ally to queer and trans people of color.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“What are some specific steps that you can take to be an active ally \/better advocate on behalf of LGBTQ+ members,” the presentation asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can you do at a policy level \u2026 to help influence\/change policies to be more LGBTQ+ inclusive within your lab\/department\/classroom?\u201d<\/p>\n
