{"id":138497,"date":"2023-12-07T00:02:48","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T05:02:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=138497"},"modified":"2023-12-06T00:27:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T05:27:09","slug":"princeton-professor-investigated-by-house-republicans-for-suspected-ties-to-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/princeton-professor-investigated-by-house-republicans-for-suspected-ties-to-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Princeton professor investigated by House Republicans for suspected ties to Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Professor calls claims &#8216;manufactured fake stories created by certain lobbies in Washington, which are interested in dragging the US to attack Iran&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A Princeton University professor suspected of advancing Iranian state interests is under investigation by the House Education and the Workforce committee.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Seyed Hossein Mousavian, a Middle Eastern nuclear and security policy specialist who has taught at Princeton for 13 years, denies he has any ties to the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not been able to go to Iran since June 2021 and I have not been engaged with any government including the government of Iran since the Iranian court convicted me in 2008,\u201d Mousavian told <em>The College Fix<\/em> via email.<\/p>\n<p>But 16 Republican members of the House committee sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Letter-to-Princeton.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber in mid-November outlining their concern regarding Mousavian\u2019s possible projection of \u201cforeign hostile regimes on American institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior to coming to the U.S. in 2009, Mousavian worked for the Iranian regime his entire professional life,\u201d the letter stated. \u201c&#8230;Despite his supposed disaffiliation with the Iranian government, Mousavian\u2019s ability to travel freely to the United States and act as an unofficial government representative while discussing U.S.-Iranian ties has left his relationship with the Iranian government unclear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter also mentions that the scholar served as Iran\u2019s ambassador to Germany, where he oversaw the same embassy that a German court found served as the \u201c\u2018headquarters\u2019 for the planning of the 1992 assassination of four Iranian dissidents at the Greek restaurant Mykonos in Berlin,\u2019\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Mousavian told <em>The College Fix<\/em> that \u201cAny direct or indirect allegations posed against me in regards to the Mykonos assassinations in Berlin are lies.\u201d An Iranian court convicted Mousavian in 2008 for suspected espionage and he left Iran in 2009, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mousavian added in his email that efforts made to push false narratives regarding his professional work as an academic are \u201cmanufactured fake stories created by certain lobbies in Washington, which are interested in dragging the US to attack Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past two decades, as an academic, I\u2019ve used every opportunity to propose a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis and dialogue and engagement between Iran and the United States,\u201d he said. \u201cAll my books, articles, speeches and interviews during 13 years working at Princeton University are about peace, security, stability and opposing wars and warmongering.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The U.S. House of Representatives&#39; Committee on Education and the Workforce has launched an investigation into <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Princeton?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Princeton<\/a>&#39;s hiring of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> regime&#39;s Hossein Mousavian, and is demanding answers from Princeton. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jy88LNUueH\">https:\/\/t.co\/jy88LNUueH<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RtAdKHIxhT\">pic.twitter.com\/RtAdKHIxhT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jason Brodsky (@JasonMBrodsky) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JasonMBrodsky\/status\/1726194088452452634?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mousavian\u2019s faculty bio states he served as Iran\u2019s Ambassador to Germany from 1990 to 1997 and also was the head of the Foreign Relations Committee of Iran\u2019s National Security Council from 1997 to 2005. He was also the spokesman for Iran\u2019s nuclear negotiations with the international community from 2003 to 2005, it states.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers, in their memo, are demanding answers from Princeton regarding Mousavian\u2019s connections to Iran, including asking whether the Obama administration was directly or indirectly involved in Princeton\u2019s hiring of Mousavian and whether Princeton is aware of any communications between Mousavian and Iranian regime officials.<\/p>\n<p>Princeton University\u2019s media relations team did not respond to requests from <em>The College Fix<\/em> seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Nov. 19 article in Fox News, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/congress-probes-princeton-university-over-professors-alleged-ties-to-iran-regime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first reported<\/a> on the probe, it came as a surprise to some in Congress that STRATCOM hosted Mousavian as a speaker in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMousavian\u2019s appearance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stratcomds.com\/2023\/speakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STRATCOM symposium<\/a> \u2018concerned members of the Armed Services Committees of both the House and the Senate. Additionally, aspects of this issue trouble us as members of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce,\u2019\u201d the memo states.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QTz9TqmlcQQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mousavian is not the only Princeton professor being probed for alleged ties to the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Robert Malley, who teaches at Princeton as well as Yale, currently works at these universities while he is on leave from his job \u201cas an envoy to Iran pending an FBI investigation and a suspension of his security clearance,\u201d <em>The College Fix<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/elite-colleges-hire-biden-official-under-fbi-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Nov. 24.<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers have <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/comer-grothman-investigate-biden-administrations-use-of-officials-with-compromising-ties-to-iranian-regime-in-secret-negotiations%EF%BF%BC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized<\/a> Malley for allegations he \u201chad compromising ties to the Iranian regime\u201d and are seeking further information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States made recent concessions to Iran, potentially in violation of the Iranian Nuclear Review Act.
