{"id":138770,"date":"2023-12-11T00:24:09","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T05:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=138770"},"modified":"2023-12-11T00:24:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T05:24:09","slug":"harvard-president-claudine-gay-accused-of-plagiarizing-sections-of-her-ph-d-dissertation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/harvard-president-claudine-gay-accused-of-plagiarizing-sections-of-her-ph-d-dissertation\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvard President Claudine Gay accused of plagiarizing sections of her Ph.D. dissertation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harvard President Claudine Gay appears to have plagiarized sections of Ph.D. dissertation, according to research published Sunday evening by Christopher Rufo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First, Gay lifts an entire paragraph nearly verbatim from Lawrence Bobo and Franklin Gilliam\u2019s paper, &#8216;Race, Sociopolitical Participation, and Black Empowerment,&#8217; while passing it off as her own paraphrase and language,&#8221; Rufo <a href=\"https:\/\/christopherrufo.com\/p\/is-claudine-gay-a-plagiarist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on his Substack along with journalist Christopher Brunet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though Gay does provide a reference to the original authors, she uses their verbatim language, with a few trivial synonym substitutions, without providing quotation marks,&#8221; he reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;Gay repeats this violation throughout the document, again using work from Bobo and Gilliam, as well as passages from Richard Shingles, Susan Howell, and Deborah Fagan, which she reproduces nearly verbatim, without quotation marks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rufo posted screenshots of the comparisons on his X account, arguing the examples are violations of Harvard&#8217;s academic integrity policy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EXCLUSIVE: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realChrisBrunet?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RealChrisBrunet<\/a> and I have obtained documentation demonstrating that Harvard President Claudine Gay plagiarized multiple sections of her Ph.D. thesis, violating Harvard&#39;s policies on academic integrity.<\/p>\n<p>This is a bombshell. \ud83e\uddf5<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Christopher F. Rufo \u2694\ufe0f (@realchrisrufo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realchrisrufo\/status\/1733976372450853222?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 10, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Rufo <a href=\"https:\/\/christopherrufo.com\/p\/is-claudine-gay-a-plagiarist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on his Substack that in her dissertation &#8220;Gay also uses identical language to [Carol] Swain, without adding quotation marks, as required.&#8221; He also noted that in several instances in the appendix, Gay lifted &#8220;entire phrases and sentences&#8221; from Gary King\u2019s book, &#8220;A Solution to the Ecological Inference Problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While she cites King\u2019s book\u2014in fact, King was her dissertation advisor\u2014Gay does not explicitly acknowledge that Appendix B is entirely grounded in King\u2019s concepts, instead passing it off as her own original work,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He concludes his post by calling on Harvard\u2019s Board of Overseers to conduct an investigation, arguing &#8220;the dissertation is the cornerstone of an academic career, and universities impose demanding standards of academic integrity, with severe consequences for violators.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gay has not responded to Rufo&#8217;s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Rufo&#8217;s claims quickly went viral on Sunday night, garnering responses from everyone from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1734063915632414862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elon Musk<\/a> to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ItsNotTheBee\/posts\/pfbid02ubQ17rAzW5jzvWPjaoAf9zvjxc4BK8Ujvos7tAknNe4YpsmDh4e4JtceSqDWVa6Pl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Not The Bee<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as Gay faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/calling-for-genocide-of-jews-not-always-bullying-elite-college-presidents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steep criticism<\/a> for how she handed her testimony before Congress last week after she argued calls on campus for the \u201cgenocide of Jews&#8221; did not amount to bullying or harassment.
