{"id":138838,"date":"2023-12-12T00:00:23","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T05:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=138838"},"modified":"2023-12-12T01:09:35","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T06:09:35","slug":"campus-chaplains-email-for-christmas-service-avoids-word-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/campus-chaplains-email-for-christmas-service-avoids-word-christmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus chaplain&#8217;s email for Christmas service avoids word &#8216;Christmas&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Wake Forest University also hosts &#8216;Winter Celebration&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A recent email sent to the Wake Forest University campus community announcing its annual Lovefeast, a service to mark Christmas, did not include the actual word &#8220;Christmas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 275-word email sent Dec. 1 to students and staff from university Chaplain Tim Auman only referenced the &#8220;holiday season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wake Forest University &#8212; originally founded by Baptists &#8212; also hosts a &#8220;Winter Celebration&#8221; for employees. No mention of the word &#8220;Christmas&#8221; was in the Nov. 28 memo to staff announcing the event.<\/p>\n<p>Copies of the two emails were provided to <em>The College Fix<\/em> by a member of the Wake Forest University community who expressed disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The university does not recognize that the second most important day on the Christian calendar is coming up later this month. But it does seem to recognize the pagan holiday of the winter solstice,&#8221; said the source, who asked to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n<p>As for the Lovefeast, the campus source said it is a Moravian Christian tradition held to celebrate Christmas, as the Moravians were the first European settlers in the WFU region of North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the university chaplain just can\u2019t bear to use that word for fear of offending, well, I don\u2019t know who exactly objects to celebrating Christmas on the campus of a historically Christian university,&#8221; said the source.<\/p>\n<p>Auman did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-138856 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/WFULovefeast.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/WFULovefeast.jpg 609w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/WFULovefeast-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/WFULovefeast-352x400.jpg 352w, https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/WFULovefeast-97x110.jpg 97w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the email to the campus community did not use &#8220;Christmas,&#8221; the WFU <a href=\"https:\/\/chaplain.wfu.edu\/news-events\/annual-christmas-lovefeast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> does include the word &#8220;Christmas&#8221; in describing the service itself, held Dec. 3.
