{"id":138881,"date":"2023-12-13T00:31:32","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T05:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=138881"},"modified":"2023-12-12T20:34:36","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T01:34:36","slug":"collegiate-sports-embed-dei-athletics-departments-hire-dei-directors-require-trainings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/collegiate-sports-embed-dei-athletics-departments-hire-dei-directors-require-trainings\/","title":{"rendered":"Collegiate sports embed DEI: Athletics departments hire DEI directors, require trainings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Even student sports clubs have diversity and inclusion officers now<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many universities\u2019 athletics departments, both public and private, now have statements, programs, and staff dedicated to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion narratives in collegiate sports, according to an analysis this month by <em>The College Fix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The University of New Mexico is currently hiring an associate athletics director for DEI and student-athlete development. Part of the job will be to \u201cdevelop, facilitate, and implement the new diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) vision,\u201d the online description <a href=\"https:\/\/unmjobs.recruiting.com\/associate-sr-associate-athletics-director-dei-and-student-athlete-development-req-26436\/job\/25628147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Illinois State University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sucss.illinois.gov\/Pages\/Jobs\/Details.aspx?tblJobsID=3297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advertised<\/a> an open position for an assistant associate athletic director of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with a salary of up to $75,000.<\/p>\n<p>Some student sports clubs now boast diversity officers and \u201cinclusivity\u201d missions as well.<\/p>\n<p>Northwestern University\u2019s new Club Ski Team, which <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2023\/03\/01\/lateststories\/club-ski-team-slaloms-alongside-scholarship-skiers-in-first-quarter-on-the-slopes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formed<\/a> last year, has a diversity, equity and inclusion chair among its student officers, the <em>Daily Northwestern<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2023\/11\/16\/campus\/asg-senate-distributes-5000-to-new-student-organizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A major shift to include DEI in sports appears to have begun around 2020.<\/p>\n<p>That year, the NCAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/news\/2020\/8\/10\/new-designees-set-to-champion-diversity-and-inclusion.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began<\/a> requiring every athletics department and conference to designate a staffer as the athletics diversity and inclusion designee, or ADID. Its announcement came in August 2020 in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death and the racial riots that followed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ADID is instrumental in helping to advance inclusive excellence as we will share diversity, inclusion and equity-related programs, initiatives and resources with designees that directly impact our student-athletes and athletics departments and conferences in positive ways,&#8221; stated Niya Blair Hackworth, NCAA director of inclusion, at the time.<\/p>\n<p>That same year, Michigan State University <a href=\"https:\/\/msutoday.msu.edu\/news\/2020\/dr-ashley-baker-named-athletics-chief-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-officer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired<\/a> its first athletics DEI staffer to \u201cdevelop and facilitate the implementation of programs specifically focused on staff and student-athlete diversity, inclusion and community outreach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Georgetown University <a href=\"https:\/\/guhoyas.com\/news\/2020\/12\/2\/general-marissa-robinson-named-executive-director-for-diversity-equity-inclusion.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">created<\/a> a similar role, an executive director for diversity, equity and inclusion for intercollegiate athletics that year, as did the <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiadogs.com\/news\/2020\/12\/7\/general-courtney-gay-named-ugaaa-assistant-athletic-director-for-diversity-equity-and-inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Georgia<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/miamihurricanes.com\/news\/2020\/06\/19\/um-athletics-designates-myles-payne-as-chief-diversity-officer-launches-diversity-inclusion-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Miami<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In one of her first actions in the role, University of Miami senior associate athletic director\/administrator and chief diversity officer Renae Myles Payne began a nine-week \u201cracial literacy\u201d training program for athletic department employees, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightintodiversity.com\/athletic-departments-bring-diversity-and-equity-officers-aboard-to-improve-the-culture-of-college-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to <em>Insight into Diversity<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>More universities added DEI athletics roles in subsequent years, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/today\/2021\/04\/07\/rick-george-leveraging-our-platform-athletics-meaningful-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Colorado Boulder<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightintodiversity.com\/athletic-departments-bring-diversity-and-equity-officers-aboard-to-improve-the-culture-of-college-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Washington<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/owlsports.com\/news\/2021\/7\/26\/general-prince-moody-named-associate-athletics-director-for-diversity-equity-inclusion-and-student-athlete-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temple University<\/a> in Philadelphia, <a href=\"https:\/\/paceuathletics.com\/news\/2022\/8\/31\/general-matt-anthony-promoted-to-associate-athletic-director-for-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-and-compliance.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pace University<\/a> in New York, the <a href=\"https:\/\/goducks.com\/staff-directory\/da-mon-merkerson\/3141#:~:text=He%20previously%20worked%20as%20an,D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Oregon<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/goprincetontigers.com\/news\/2022\/5\/16\/general-princeton-announces-jt-turner-as-associate-director-of-athletics-for-diversity-equity-inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princeton University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Others, including <a href=\"https:\/\/wvusports.com\/news\/2020\/8\/18\/baseball-lyons-creates-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-committee.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Virginia University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scu.edu\/diversity\/advancing-racial-justice\/new-initiatives-and-continuing-commitments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Clara University<\/a> in California, and <a href=\"https:\/\/clemsontigers.com\/inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clemson University<\/a> in South Carolina, are among the schools that created DEI athletics committees or task forces in 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/espn-host-accused-of-bigotry-for-opposing-men-in-womens-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN host accused of \u2018bigotry\u2019 for opposing men in women\u2019s sports<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Student athletes are being recruited to promote DEI as well. In 2021, St. Joseph\u2019s University, a private institution in Philadelphia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sju.edu\/news\/student-athletes-take-charge-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-initiatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">created<\/a> a student working group to help facilitate discussions of DEI within the athletics department.<\/p>\n<p>Its <a href=\"https:\/\/sjuhawks.com\/documents\/2020\/9\/14\/SJU_Athletics_DEI_Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Athletics DEI Plan<\/a> calls for students from each of its 20 varsity sports teams to attend leadership programs and then arrange diversity and inclusion discussions and activities with their teammates.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, USC Athletics has <a href=\"https:\/\/usctrojans.com\/sports\/2023\/12\/7\/usc-trojans-athletics-diversity-equity-inclusion-dei-here-u-belong-jedi-peer-educators.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired<\/a> five justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion peer educators to lead the private university\u2019s required biannual implicit bias trainings for student athletes.<\/p>\n<p>At Penn State University, a Big Ten school, the athletics department has a whole <a href=\"https:\/\/gopsusports.com\/sports\/2020\/6\/24\/about-acdei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">section<\/a> of its website dedicated to DEI.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the school sent three student athletes to a new Athlete Leadership Summit hosted by the LGBTQ group Athlete Ally to \u201cdiscuss progress and the next steps in driving inclusivity nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And at the <a href=\"https:\/\/gohuskies.com\/sports\/2022\/10\/12\/dei-initiatives-programs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Washington<\/a>, athletics programs include Husky Pride, which provides \u201can avenue to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, equity and access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the public university requires DEI training for its coaches and staff through a program called The 3L (Listen, Learn, Lead) Series. According to the UW athletics department <a href=\"https:\/\/gohuskies.com\/sports\/2022\/10\/12\/dei-initiatives-programs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, all \u201cstaff and coaches are expected to attend two sessions\u201d per year. Topics include \u201cHow to Create a Culture of Anti-Racism,\u201d \u201cBias &amp; Microaggressions,\u201d and \u201cCultural Humility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some universities even are calling DEI a \u201cfoundational\u201d part of athletics.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Northwestern University\u2019s sports program published a new <a href=\"https:\/\/nusports.com\/news\/2023\/4\/25\/general-r-is-e-northwestern-a-strategic-plan-for-excellence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strategic plan<\/a> that puts \u201ca strong focus on making D.E.I. a foundation of everything Northwestern Athletics does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of this effort, its leaders have been touting DEI efforts right alongside team victories.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Derrick Gragg <a href=\"https:\/\/nusports.com\/news\/2023\/6\/9\/general-positively-dr-gragg-june-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentioned<\/a> the sports department\u2019s decision to \u201cpurposefully advance\u201d DEI in an article celebrating the lacrosse team\u2019s eighth NCAA title and the women\u2019s soccer team\u2019s rank as 11th in the nation.<\/p>\n<p><em>The College Fix<\/em> contacted staff in the Northwestern athletics\u2019 communications office several times this month, asking about its DEI efforts and any pushback from coaches or athletes, but none responded.<\/p>\n<p>The situation is much the same at Youngstown State University in Ohio.\u00a0Jaysen Spencer, director of athletic academic services, <a href=\"https:\/\/thejambar.com\/new-era-of-diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> <em>The Jambar<\/em> student newspaper in March that their athletics goals are centered around DEI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything we do needs to be done through a DEI lens, whether it\u2019s hiring more diverse coaches, recruiting a more diverse student-athlete population and hiring diverse medical staff,\u201d Spencer said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/male-dropped-request-to-compete-as-female-swimmer-even-as-roanoke-college-rushed-to-accommodate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Male dropped request to compete as female swimmer, even as Roanoke College rushed to accommodate<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IMAGE: sirtravelalot\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n            <div class=\"article-truncate-control\">\n                <button class=\"show-complete-article\">\n                    Read More                <\/button>\n            <\/div>\n\n        ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even student sports clubs have diversity and inclusion officers now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1334,"featured_media":117291,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1085,1077],"tags":[52202,43440,23477,655,2987,5702,13981,4107,1112,2942],"acf":[],"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_featured_media_url":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/womencompeting.jpg","jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2Oh4L-A81","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/138881"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1334"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=138881"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/138881\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":138931,"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/138881\/revisions\/138931"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/117291"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=138881"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=138881"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=138881"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
