The IRS approved Musk’s funding application in March<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Elon Musk plans to launch a STEM-focused primary and secondary school and a new university in Austin and has allocated $100 million to the effort.<\/p>\n

The tech billionaire and owner of X filed an application<\/a> with the Internal Revenue Service to establish an elementary and high school dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and, ultimately, a university in the Texas capital, Bloomberg<\/em> reported<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The IRS application, obtained by Bloomberg<\/em>, was filed in October 2022 and approved in March.<\/p>\n

The application states that Musk’s new “[f]oundation…is in the process of creating an independent primary and secondary school,” and “The School intends ultimately to expand its operations to create a university dedicated to education at the highest levels.”<\/p>\n

“If a student is admitted to the School, tuition and financial support will be provided to the extent of available resources,” according to the application.<\/p>\n

The School will instruct students in person and is searching for an executive director, teachers, and administrators.<\/p>\n

It will boast a traditional curriculum \u201calongside hands-on learning experience including simulations, case studies, fabrication\/design projects and labs,\u201d according to the application.<\/p>\n

The university will pursue accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.<\/p>\n

Musk moved to Texas in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, he told<\/a> CNBC at the time.<\/p>\n

Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area have an \u201coutsized influence in the world,\u201d he told the news outlet.<\/p>\n

Musk’s efforts to promote academic freedom recently drew ire from a Columbia University journalism fellow, The College Fix<\/em> reported<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n

In November, Anika Navaroli, who had worked at Twitter before her appointment as a senior fellow at Columbia\u2019s Tow Center for Digital Journalism, wrote<\/a> Nov. 2 in The Hill<\/em> that Musk’s support for free speech on X is both “immoral” and “dangerous.”<\/p>\n
