Republican detractors have sought to gut funding for public universities, roll back tenure and banish initiatives that make colleges more welcoming to students of color, disabled students and the LGBTQ+ community. They also have aimed to limit how race and gender are discussed in classrooms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The AP credited people such as Christopher Rufo for leading the charge, along with\u00a0<em>The Washington Free Beacon<\/em>, which also highlighted Gay&#8217;s plagiarism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am contributing an initial $10,000 to a &#8216;plagiarism hunting&#8217; fund,&#8221; Rufo wrote on X prior to the AP. &#8220;We will expose the rot in the Ivy League and restore truth, rather than racialist ideology, as the highest principle in academic life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">ANNOUNCEMENT: I am contributing an initial $10,000 to a &#8220;plagiarism hunting&#8221; fund. Rufo \u2694\ufe0f (@realchrisrufo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realchrisrufo\/status\/1742339419854770284?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 3, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The AP received criticism for its framing of the issue, with X appending a &#8220;Community Notes&#8221; fact-check to the original post.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Plagiarism is a breach of rules for Harvard University,&#8221; the Community Note stated. &#8220;Claudine Gay was ultimately forced to resign for a series of breaches of this policy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Plagiarism &#8211; or application of the rules around plagiarism &#8211; therefore cannot be considered a &#8216;weapon,'&#8221; the note stated.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Harvard president&#8217;s resignation highlights new conservative weapon against colleges: plagiarism <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GiVkT3LgUo\">https:\/\/t.co\/GiVkT3LgUo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Associated Press (@AP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AP\/status\/1742455903264129474?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 3, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Kay of\u00a0<em>Quillete<\/em> noted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonkay\/status\/1742538883772924109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">response<\/a> that the AP forbids plagiarism.<\/p>\n<p>Gay&#8217;s resignation drew criticism from some black scholars who c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/black-leftist-scholars-blame-harvard-presidents-resignation-on-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laimed<\/a> it was racism that forced out Gay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Racist mobs won\u2019t stop until they topple all Black people from positions of power and influence who are not reinforcing the structure of racism,&#8221; Boston University Professor Ibram Kendi wrote.
